BROOKINGS The man accused of stealing more than $7,000 from the Brookings Ice Skating Association has lost his employment with the city.
Paul Laleman, former parks supervisor, is no longer an employee of the city of Brookings, City Manager Paul Briseno said in a recent email in response to questions from the Brookings Register.
The questions, and answer, came after a park supervisor job opening in the citys Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department was posted on the citys website.
Laleman is facing a grand theft charge, which is a Class 4 felony in South Dakota. Its punishable by up to 10 years in state prison along with a possible $20,000 fine.
According to previous Register reporting, he is accused of stealing more than $7,000 from the locked concession stand at Larson Ice Center, which he had access to because of his job. The money was taken in separate incidents, during which time BISA installed hidden cameras that recorded Lalemans involvement.
BISA is a nonprofit group that supports youth hockey in Brookings.
