VOLGA The Flandreau Fliers and the Sioux Valley Cossacks both hit the mat as they competed at the Big East/Lake Central Conference Tournament at the Cossack Center on Saturday morning.
The Fliers finished in ninth place at the tournament with 62 team points while the Cossacks finished 10th with 57 points.
Parker finished in first place with 177 points while Kingsbury County finished in second place with 147 points. Howard finished third with 120.5 points, Beresford/A-H finished fourth with 105.5 points and Mt. Vernon/Plankinton finished fifth with 100 points.
Flandreau
Karter Headrick finished first place for the Fliers, earning four straight pins to win the 190-pound bracket.
Headrick began the tournament by pinning Clark/Willow Lakes Riley Popp at 1:51 in the first round before pinning Parkers Jake Stone in 31 seconds in the quarterfinals. Headrick pinned Kingsbury Countys Breyten Johnson in 52 seconds during the semifinals before pinning McCook Central/Montroses Will Rotert at 2:36 of the championship match.
Headrick improved to 28-8 on the season with the tournament title.
Brayden Wiese also placed third for the Fliers at 138 pounds. Wiese pinned Vanden Virchow of Sioux Valley in 59 seconds during the first round and pinned Tanner Baker of Mt. Vernon/Plankinton at 3:32 of the quarterfinals. After he was pinned by Parkers Michael Even in the semifinals, Wiese rebounded by pinning MCMs Ray Sandine in 22 seconds during the consolation semifinals and earning a 7-4 decision over Baker in the third place match.
Cameron Blair competed for Flandreau at 106 pounds and split his four matches at the tournament. Blair picked up wins by defeating Deuels Gage Landmark 7-4 in the second round of the consolation bracket and pinning Parkers Brysen Baloun in 30 seconds during the third round of the consolation bracket.
Teague Bergjord competed at 113 pounds for the Fliers and split his four matches. Bergjord defeated Deuels Bently Fokken by fall in 47 seconds during the second round of the consolation bracket and won by a 5-0 decision over Beresford/A-Hs Bennett Farley in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Zach Pederson competed at 120 pounds for the Fliers and split his four matches. Pederson earned an 8-3 decision over Hamlin/Castlewoods Jaden Buchmann in the second round of the consolation bracket before pinning Clark/Willow Lakes Mason Severson at 2:38 of the third round of the consolation bracket.
Gabriel Frias competed at 126 pounds for the Fliers and picked up his lone win in sudden victory over MCMs Otto Uberty 6-4 in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Alex Lopez competed at 175 pounds and lost both his matches at the tournament.
Flandreau will have its final regular season tuneup as part of a quad with Beresford/Alcester-Hudson, Marion/Freeman and Mt. Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday night.
Sioux Valley
Tate Steffensen finished in first place for the Cossacks at 132 pounds, winning all three of his matches to improve to 41-5 on the season.
Steffensen pinned Beresford/A-Hs Karzen Somervold at 3:43 in the quarterfinals before earning an 11-0 major decision over Clark/Willow Lakes Logan Foster. Steffensen won the title by earning a 4-0 decision over Kingsbury Countys Greyson Nielson.
Owen Vandeweerd also finished in first place, winning all three of his matches in the 285-pound bracket to improve to 39-4 on the year. Vandeweerd picked up pins in each match defeating Deuels Allen Wetz at 3:27 of the quarterfinals, Garretsons Tanner Baatz at 5:38 of the semifinals and Mt. Vernon/Plankintons Aiden Novak at 2:53 of the championship.
Vanden Virchow competed at 138 pounds and defeated Elk-Point/Jeffersons Owen Rigg by fall at 4:19 of the second round of the consolation bracket.
Wyatt Hardt competed at 157 pounds and defeated Clark Willow/Lakes Lincoln Reidburn at 4:32 in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Harvey Hardt competed at 165 pounds and Luke Johnson competed at 175 pounds for the Cossacks and dropped both of their matches at the tournament.
The Cossacks will return to action during the Region 1B Tournament on Feb. 17.
