High school boys wrestling: Brookings Bobcats finish 13th at Yankton Invitational

YANKTON The Brookings Bobcats finished 13th at the 2024 Yankton Boys Wrestling Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats finished with 53 points while Rapid City Stevens finished in first place with 209.5 points.

Tea finished in second place with 190.5 points, Pierre finished in third place with 179.5 points, Watertown finished fourth with 171.0 points and West Central finished in fifth place with 143.0 points.

Tate Helmbolt finished in first place for the Bobcats by winning all four of his matches. Helmbolt defeated West Centrals Grayson Pischke by a 17-2 tech fall in the first round and earned a 15-0 tech fall over Mitchells Kale Hofer in the quarterfinals.

Helmbolt pinned Pierres Gable Uhrig in 1:31 during the semifinals before winning a 1-0 decision over Shea Richter of Rapid City Stevens to win the title and improve to 29-3 on the season.

Logan Straub finished in fifth place for the Bobcats after winning four of his six matches at 157 pounds. Straub pinned Tyler Johnson of Rapid City Stevens at 5:16 in the first round before dropping a 10-2 major decision to Teas Carson Lohr in the quarterfinals.

Straub worked his way through the consolation bracket beginning with a 6-0 decision over teammate Blake Kannegieter in the second round and a 6-4 decision over Watertowns Landen Lewis in the third round. After dropping an 8-1 decision to Sioux Falls Jeffersons Austin Osborn, Straub finished the tournament by pinning Johnson at 2:09 of the fifth-place match.

Levi Quam finished in sixth place at 120 pounds and started his afternoon by pinning George Scott of Lennox at 2:47 of the first round. Quam was pinned by Tyler Woodring of Tea at 1:46 of the quarterfinals before pinning Vermillions Braxton Beach at 2:35 in the third round of the consolation bracket.

Quam lost an 8-2 decision to Sioux Falls Lincolns Hudson Cisar in the consolation semifinals and lost a 10-7 decision to Yanktons Devon Coke in the fifth-place match.

Dylan Reynolds placed eighth at 285 pounds. Reynolds was pinned in 54 seconds by West Centrals Gavin Pischke in the first round bur won by injury default 37 seconds into his second-round consolation match against Edly Amaro of Yankton. Reynolds was pinned by Lucas Giersberg of Douglas in 2:46 during the third-round consolation match and was pinned in 2:20 by Cooper Myers of Rapid City Stevens in the seventh-place match.

Sawyer Johnson competed at 126 pounds for Brookings and earned a 3-1 decision over Kedren Fergen of Lennox in the first round of the consolation bracket.

James Fitzpatrick competed at 150 pounds and pinned Rylan Langbehn of Lennox in 48 seconds in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Kannegieter competed at 157 pounds and pinned Yanktons Dylan Howe at 1:48 in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Zach Hagemann competed at 157 pounds and pinned Dakota Valleys Samson Do at 4:39 in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Carson Loehr competed at 215 pounds and went 0-2 at the tournament.

After their final meet of the regular season, the Bobcats will prepare for the Region 1A Wrestling Tournament at Tea Area High School on Feb. 17.
