High school boys basketball: De Smet hands Sioux Valley its first loss

SIOUX FALLS The Sioux Valley boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night as the Cossacks fell to De Smet 50-44 in overtime in the Sanford Pentagon Heritage Classic.

No. 3 ranked Sioux Valley (14-1) jumped out to a 7-2 lead and led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Cossacks then extended their lead to 24-18 and led 26-20 at halftime.

The Cossacks led 30-26 with 4:35 left in the third quarter but it was 37-35 heading into the fourth. The Bulldogs (13-3) scored the first five points of the fourth and the Cossacks responded with five straight points of their own to make it 42-40 with 2:44 left in the game. Neither team scored for the next 2:35 but De Smets Britt Carlson made a jumper with nine seconds left to tie the game and it went to overtime.

De Smet, who is ranked No. 4 in Class B scored five-straight points to begin OT and that was enough cushion to get the Bulldogs the victory.

Sioux Valley shot 34.6% from the field and was 6-of-17 from three. Maverick Nelson led the Cossacks with 13 points and six rebounds. Hudsyn Ruesink had 12 points and five boards. Alec Squires had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

De Smet shot 39.6% from the field and was 7-of-25 from three. George Jensen had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Kadyn Fast had 13 points and Carlson had 10 points.

The Bulldogs had 28 rebounds and the Cossacks had 26. De Smet had 11 turnovers and Sioux Valley had nine. The Bulldogs were 5-of-8 at the free throw line and the Cossacks were 2-of-7 at the charity stripe.

Sioux Valley will face another tough test on Monday night as the Cossacks will travel to No. 2 ranked Hamlin (12-3). That game is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m.
