High school boys basketball: Bocats’ comeback bid comes up short against SF Lincoln

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bobcats tried to overcome a 13-point deficit in the second half but their comeback bid came up short in a 62-59 loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln at Bob Jostad Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Patriots took control of the game early with a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and entered halftime with a 33-27 advantage. Lincoln continued to hold a six point advantage until midway through the third quarter when a 7-0 capped by a pair of free throws by Sam DeGroot gave the Patriots a 48-35 lead.

Brookings closed the gap to 50-43 at the end of the third quarter and scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to take a 52-50 lead on Austin Clarks 3-pointer with 4:55 to go. The game was tied at 54-54 when Sam Ericcson broke the deadlock with a 3-pointer and Tate Scafer followed up with another 3-pointer to give the Patriots a 60-54 lead with 1:04 to play.

A floater by Clark and a 3-pointer by Ben Moret made it a 60-59 game with 24 seconds to go but Schafer knocked down a pair of free throws and Edison Noll came up with a steal on the final possession to help the Patriots come away with the victory.

Brodie McCarty led Brookings with 17 points and six rebounds while Clark had 11 points, three assists, a steal and a rebound. Moret had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Bobcats while Sam Johnson had 10 points and an assist off the bench.

Schafer finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist for the Patriots while Noll had 10 points, two steals, a block and a turnover. Jack Smith, Ericsson and De Groot each finished with nine points for Lincoln while Braxton Mohr finished with six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Brookings shot 46 percent including 7-for-19 (36.8%) on 3-point attempts. The Bobcats made all eight free throws and out-rebounded the Patriots 28-25 while committing 13 turnovers.

Lincoln shot 44 percent from the field including 12-of-23 (52.2%) 3-pointers. The Patriots went 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line and committed 11 turnovers.

The Bobcats fell to 1-13 with the loss and will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
