FARGO, N.D. The South Dakota State women outscored North Dakota State 8-1 in the final 1:40 on Thursday night and extended their win streak to 10 games as they beat the Bison 65-58 at the Scheels Center.
The Bison and Jackrabbits were tied 57-57 with 1:40 to play and Paige Meyer made a jumper in the paint to put the Jacks up two with 1:24 to play. SDSU got a stop and a pair of Tori Nelson free throws made it a four-point game with 35 seconds left.
NDSUs Heaven Hamling then went to the line and only made one of two but Paige Meyer did the same thing on the other end. The Jacks forced a turnover with 29 seconds left and two free throws from Mesa Byom sealed the victory for SDSU.
The Jacks led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. NDSU then took a 27-24 lead with 2:10 left in the first half but Nelson made a bucket with 58 seconds left to make it a one-point game at halftime.
SDSU took the lead with 8:31 left in the third and by the end of the quarter the Jacks led 49-40. The Bison then opened the fourth quarter with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 52-49 with 4:15 to play. NDSU then trailed by four with just under three minutes to play and four straight free throws from the Bison tied things up before the final run from SDSU.
The Jacks shot 34.5% from the field and were 8-of-20 from three. SDSU was led by Brooklyn Meyer who had 17 points and five rebounds. Paige Meyer had 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Madysen Vlastuin and Byom each had nine points.
NDSU shot 35.3% from the field and was 4-of-15 from beyond the arc. The Bison were led by Hamling who had 18 points and six rebounds. Elle Evans had 17 points and six rebounds.
The Bison won the rebound battle 39-32. SDSU had 12 turnovers and NDSU had 18. The Bison were 18-of-26 at the free throw line and the Jacks were 17-of-22 at the charity stripe.
It was the 38th-straight win over Summit League opponents for the Jacks. SDSU improved to 16-5 overall and 8-0 conference play. The Jacks now have a two-game lead over Oral Roberts for first place in the conference and a 2.5-game lead over NDSU. SDSU will travel to Vermillion on Saturday to play USD at 6 p.m. The Coyotes will enter Saturdays game in fourth place in the conference and are three games back of SDSU.
