High school wrestling: Brookings girls come in second at home tournament, boys finish fourth

BROOKINGS The Brookings girls wrestling team came in second place at the Les Tlustos Brookings Invite on Saturday and the boys came in fourth.

Between the two teams the Bobcats had two first-place finishers and four second-place finishers.

Girls

Joanna Steinlicht and Maizy Mathis each came in first place for the Bobcat girls. Mathis won the 165-pound weight class. She pinned Sioux Valleys Ava VandeWeerd in the quarterfinals in 29 seconds and then pinned Vermillions Blair Merkwan in the semifinals. In the championship match she won a 6-3 decision over Mitchells Taylor DeJong.

Steinlicth came in first in the 145-pound weight class. She won by forfeit in the quarterfinals and then pinned West Centrals Hailey Fortney in 3:43 in the semifinals. In the championship match she ended up winning via injury default over Yanktons Winry Yaggie 4:07 into the match.

Cierra Strand came in third for the Bobcats in the 132-pound weight class. She pinned Lennoxs Jaelyn Fergen in 1:43 in the quarterfinals before getting pinned by Beresford/Alcester-Hudsons Reese Olson in 4:18. She then won a 6-2 decision over Dell Rapids Bailey Credeur to advance to the third place match and pinned Fergen in 1:39 to get third place.

Boys

Tate Helmbolt, Nolan Miles, Gabe Stern and Joey Fitzpatrick all came in second place.

Helmbolt had a second place finish in the 106-pound weight class. He received a bye in the first round and then won a 18-1 technical fall over Vermillions Matt Roob in the second round. He pinned Sioux Falls Lincolns Isaac Kauffman in 44 seconds in the quarterfinals and then won an 18-2 technical fall over Pierres Gavle Uhrig. In the championship match he lost a 10-2 major decision to Rapid City Centrals Pierce Hurd.

Miles came in second in the 132-pound weight class. He pinned Beresford/Alcester-Hudsons Evan Dressen in the first round in 2:46 and then won a 20-5 technical fall over Mitchells Penn Long in the quarterfinals. He would then beat Sioux Falls Lincolns Bently Williams with a 7-4 decision in the semifinals before falling in a 6-3 decision to Sioux Falls Jeffersons Graham Wilde in the championship match.

Stern finished in second in the 165-pound weight class. He received a bye in the first round and then pinned Flandreaus Justin Klein in 2:46 in the quarterfinal. He would then win a 6-3 decision over Pierres Lucas Chamberlin in the semifinals before losing a 17-8 major decision to Logan OConnor of Harrisburg in the championship match.

Fitzpatrick was the second place finisher at 190. He pinned Beresford/Alcester-Hudsons Taten Twedt in 1:30 in the first round and then pinned Flandreaus Karter Headrick in 2:26 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he defeated Canbys Nick Wagner via medical forfeit and then was pinned by Pierres Chance Carda in 1:04 in the championship match.

Jacob Milliron came in third in the 113-pound weight class. He pinned Rapid City Centrals Aden Candelaria in 5:37 in the first round and then pinned Dell Rapids Camden Tebay in 5:12 in the quarterfinals. He would then lose a 14-5 major decision to Harrisburgs Tristan Stoeser in the semifinals but beat Candelaria via a 9-7 sudden victory to advance to the third place match. In the third place match he won a 15-0 technical fall over Flandreaus Teague Bergjord.

Sioux Valley girls

Summer Guthmiller came in first place in the 132-pound weight class. She pinned Rapid City Centrals Natalie Dierksen in the quarterfinals and then pinned Brandon Valleys Brenna Reker in the semifinals. In the championship match she pinned Beresford/Alcester-Hudsons Reese Olson in 2:45.
