College track and field: Top three finishes highlight day two of the SDSU D2/NAIA Open

BROOKINGS Numerous event titles and top three finishes highlighted the second day of competition at the SDSU D2/NAIA Open on Saturday afternoon at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

One of the biggest headlines came in the womens pole vault when Laci Leverty joined SDSU history and cleared 11-11.75 for a second place finish. Shes now in fifth on the Jackrabbit all-time list. Kiah Boetel also finished fifth in the event with a PR of 11-00.00.

In other womens events, Apryl Adderley leapt her way into second place of the long jump finals with her personal-best mark of 17-10.25 and Emma Smith finished fourth in the triple jump with a 34-10.25.

Josie Curry led the way for SDSU in the weight throw, taking fifth place with a personal best 51-05.50. Kirsten Kilker threw a PR of 49-09.75 for seventh and Lydia Hill finished ninth with a personal-best mark of 47-10.50

Brielle Dixon won the 60-meter hurdles with her clocking of 8.45, just .02 seconds off her school record time as Jenna Johnson earned runner-up in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.88, followed closely by Rich-Ann Archer in third place with a 7.89.

Johnson and Archer went on to find success again in the 200-meter dash, finishing second in 25.51 and third in 25.82, respectively. Erika Kuntz (25.86, PR) and Jessica Boekelheide (25.97) also joined them in the top 10. Abby Hughes also ran a PR of 27.11.

Maggie Madsen sped her way into second place overall in her 400-meter dash debut with a clocking of 58.95.

Claire Beckman won the 600-meter run in 1:34.43 as Harley Fischer took third in 1:37.22 and Reese Luze ran a 1:37.29 for fourth in her Jackrabbit debut.

In the 800-meter run, Hannah Spoden clocked a time of 2:20.64 for fourth place.

Four Jacks placed in the top 10 of the mile, led by Emma Gonzalez (5:10.98, PR) in third place. Jenna Soine was close behind in fourth with a 5:11.35 in her event debut as Emma Ecker (5:21.13) came seventh and Nina Dawson (5:34.41) took ninth.

Kadense Dooley took fifth in the 3000-meter run with her personal-best time of 10:41.80 as Hannah Neusch finished seventh with an 11:14.33.

Finally, the A 4×400-meter relay team finished fifth overall in the event with their time of 4:06.01.

The SDSU women claimed first in the team standings out of 15 squads with 165.2 points. Augustana (97.5) and Dickinson State (67) rounded out the top three.

On the mens side of action, Pierre Lear won the 60-meter hurdle finals with a 7.98 as Carter Johnson ran an 8.44 for fifth and Gunnar Gunderson took eighth in 8.72. Johnson also ran a new PR of 8.42 in the event prelims.

Drew Olson took third place overall in the 60-meter dash finals after running a time of 6.89.

Three Jackrabbits finished in the top 10 with Thailan Hallman (22.14, PR) in seventh, Carter Toews (22.19) in eighth and Olson (22.26) in 10th. Reggie Slaba (22.83), Andrew Law (23.09), Jeremiah Donahoe (23.26) and Aiden Voss (23.87) also all ran new personal bests in the event.

Kudra Nzibariza took eighth place in the 400-meter dash with a 49.76 while Jeremiah Donahoe clocked a 50.17 for 10th place overall.

Andrew Moeller ran a 1:22.41 for a runner-up finish in the 600-meter and Sean Murphy took ninth with a 1:24.29 in his event debut.

Jackson Dutcher won the mens 800-meter in his event debut with a time of 1:55.72 and Tyler ONeill finished eighth with a personal-best 2:01.28.

Cormick Logue finished sixth in his heat and sixth overall in the mens mile run after clocking a time of 4:21.96 while in the 3000-meter run, Ben Anteau won with a clocking of 8:39.85 and teammate Will Harder ran an 8:57.22 for a sixth place finish.

Isaac Flanegan took first place in the mens triple jump finals with his mark of 42-04.75 and in the long jump finals, Rylan McDonnell finished as runner-up with a PR of 22-06.50 and Flanegan was ninth with a 20-09.25.

Matt Katz sailed his way into second place in the pole vault with a 15-03.25 as Connor Powers cleared 6-06.75 for second place overall in the high jump and Carson Kirwan finished fifth with a 6-01.00.

The South Dakota State men finished first out of 16 squads with 131 points as Northern State (115.5) and Iowa Central CC (80) rounded out the top three.

Day one

Action kicked off with the multi events, which saw Lizzy Gillingham win the womens pentathlon with a total of 3251 points and a new PR in the high jump (4-09.25). Robyn Dayton finished fifth overall with 2726 points.

On the track, two mens 4×800-meter relay teams jumped onto the SDSU Top 10 All-Time list. Sean Murphy, Josh Becker, Andrew Moeller and Brandon Kampsen clocked a 7:42.16 for second in the event and second all-time.

Jackson Dutcher, Will Lohr, Nathan Notgrass and Tyler ONeill then teamed up and ran a 7:50.50 for a fifth place finish in the event. The time also tied for ninth in school history.

The lone field event of the day was the mens and womens discus, highlighted by Caiden Fredricks first-place mark of 176-04.25 in his event debut. Also in the finals, Ethan Fischer claimed runner-up with a 173-04.75 and Ryan Hackbart took fifth with a 145-04.50 in his event debut.

Milee Young threw a 140-09.75 for second place as Ryann Moline (125-11.50) was sixth and Kaitlynn Bot (121-11.50) came ninth.

A look ahead

Jackrabbit track and field will split and head for the Bison Open in Fargo, ND and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, IA on Feb. 2 and 3.
