High school boys basketball: Turnovers spoil upset bid for Brookings against top-ranked Mitchell

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bobcats committed 17 turnovers which led to 27 points as their upset bid of top-ranked Mitchell came up short, falling to the Kernels 68-55 in Bob Jostad Gymnasium on Thursday night.

Mitchell jumped out to an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 23-16 advantage in the second quarter to lead 41-29 at halftime. The Bobcats gained a 17-15 advantage and cut the lead down to seven points in the second half but Mitchell put the game away with a 12-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Owen Burns led Brookings with 17 points and seven rebounds while Brodie McCarty had 14 points and three rebounds. Austin Clark had eight points, three assists two rebounds and a steal and Griffen Bartels had eight points, three rebounds, three assists and a block.

Colton Smith led Mitchell with 26 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, two blocks and an assist. Markus Talley finished with 18 points, six assists and six rebounds and Gavin Soukup finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Gavin Hinker had six points, two rebounds and an assist.

The Bobcats shot 48 percent from the floor in the game including 10-for-18 (55.6%) on 3-pointers. The Bobcats also made 5-of-10 (50%) free throws.

The Kernels shot 48 percent from the floor including 6-for-21 (28.6%) on 3-pointers. Mitchell also made 10-of-15 (66.7%) free throws, committed six turnovers and out-rebounded the Bobcats 28-24.

The Bobcats fell to 1-11 with the loss and will host Sioux Falls Washington on Tuesday night.
