High school boys basketball roundup: Sioux Valley, Estelline/Hendricks and Elkton-Lake Benton earn wins

Sioux Valley, Estelline/Hendricks and Elkton-Lake Benton each picked up wins in Thursdays area boys basketball action.

Sioux Valley 72, McCook Central/Montrose 30

SALEM The Cossacks jumped ahead 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and led 37-20 at halftime. Sioux Valley used a 21-6 advantage to lead 58-26 at the end of the third quarter and out-scored the Fighting Cougars 14-4 in the fourth quarter.

Alec Squires had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Maverick Nelson also had 16 points. Hudsyn Ruesink had 11 points and six assists and Maxwell Engebretson had 12 points. Jace Christensen had 10 points and five assists as Sioux Valley improved to 12-0 on the season.

Estelline/Hendricks 77, Arlington 47

ARLINGTON The Redhawks took a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 38-26 at halftime. Estelline/Hendricks pulled away in the second half using a 25-14 advantage to take a 63-40 lead at the end of the third quarter and out-scored the Cardinals 14-7 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

Mattix Huasman led E/H with 20 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals while Kyler Carlson had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Caden Ching had 10 points, five rebounds and an assist while Wyat James and Braxton Pravecek had six points each.

Miles Antonen had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds for Arlington while Tommy Bacon had nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Riley Miller had six points, three rebounds and a block and Leilan Farstad had six points, two rebounds and two steals.

Estelline/Hendricks shot 43 percent for the game including 5-for-21 (23.8%) on 3-pointers. The Redhawks made 6-of-12 (50%) free throws, committed eight turnovers and out-rebounded Arlington 53-39.

Arlington shot 33 percent in the game including 3-for-22 (13.6%) on 3-pointers. The Cardinals made 2-of-12 (16.7%) free throws and committed 15 turnovers.

The Redhawks improved to 8-4 on the season and will host Waverly-South Shore on Tuesday night.

Arlington fell to 1-8 and will compete at the DSU Classic on Saturday.

Elkton-Lake Benton 65, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 43

ELKTON The Elks jumped ahead 21-7 in the first quarter and took a 43-18 lead into halftime. ELB remained in control in the second half, leading 57-30 at the end of the third quarter. ORR out-scored the Elks 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

Tanner Drietz had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists while Colt Beck had 13 points, four assists and two rebounds in the win. Carson Griffith had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals while Jackson Smallfield and Riley Nordmeyer had six points each. Tanner Stein also finished with five points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Cooper Merager had 11 points while Brodie Albertson and Caden Hojer had six points each.

ELB improved to 4-7 on the season and will travel to Great Plains Lutheran on Saturday night.

ORR fell to 3-9 with the loss and will host Howard on Monday night.
