Local hockey: Brookings Rangers’ Bantam A team wins Woodchipper Classic in Fargo

The Brookings Rangers Bantam A team won the Woodchipper Classic in Fargo while the Boys JV, Bantam B, both PeeWee teams and Squirt A teams were all in action as part of this weeks Ranger Roundup.

BANTAM A

FARGO The Rangers picked up their first tournament title of the season as they went 4-0 during the Woodchipper Classic in Fargo from Jan. 19 to Jan. 21.

The Rangers defeated Monticello, Wayzata Blue, Moorhead Black and Eden Prairie to win the championship.

Brookings 11, Monticello 0

The Rangers opened the tournament with a convincing victory over Monticello on Friday night.

Carson Kludt had a six-point game with two goals and four assists while Jason Ready recorded a hat trick with a pair of assists.

Maxten Jensen had a goal and an assist while Mason Diers and Mauer Bartley each had two goals. Un-Hyeng Keay scored a goal while Jack Lovseth and Ahmann Atwood each had an assist.

Neil Trygstad made five saves and the Rangers out-shot Monticello 48-5.

Brookings 8, Wayzata Blue 1

On Saturday afternoon, Jensen and Ready each had a hat trick in the Rangers win over Wayzata Blue.

Bartley had a goal and an assist while Cannon Friedrich had two assists. Atwood scored a goal while Nolan Krogman, Lovseth, Andre Friedrich and Carson Kludt each had assists.

Trygstad made 12 saves in the win for the Rangers, who outshot Wayzata 39-12.

Brookings 8, Moorhead Black 0

Ready had two goals and an assist and Trygstad stopped 11 shots to give the Rangers their second shutout victory of the tournament on Saturday night.

Krogman and Kludt each had a goal and an assist and Diers and Andrew Friedrich each scored a goal in the win. Bartley, Jensen and Keay also had assists for the Rangers, who out-shot Moorhead 47-11.

Brookings 8, Bemidji 1

Jensen had two goals and two assists as the Rangers won over Bemidji on Sunday morning.

Ready and Diers scored a goal and dished out two assists while Kludt scored twice. Andrew Friedrich also scored while Nolan Krogman and Cannon Friedrich each had an assist.

Trygstad made 21 saves in the win and the Rangers out-shot Bemidji 33-21.

Brookings 3, Eden Prairie 1

The Rangers defeated Eden Prairie to win the tournament championship on Sunday morning.

The Rangers scored 56 seconds into the game with Lovseths goal from Isaac Andal and took a 2-0 lead on Barlteys goals from Ready with 11:31 to go in the first period. Ethan Foerster extended the lead with an assist from Ready with 7:30 left in the second period and that was enough for Trygstad who made 10 saves on 11 shots to earn the title.

The Rangers out-shot Eden Prairie 29-11 in the championship.

BOYS JV

The Rangers split two games over the weekend, falling to Sioux Falls West on Friday night but defeating Oahe on Saturday.

Sioux Falls West 4, Brookings 1

SIOUX FALLS Carter Spicer put Sioux Falls on the board with his power play goal at 13:13 of the first period but Parker Nielsen tied the game with a power play goal from Andrew Hahn at 15:53.

After the game entered the first intermission tied at 1-1, Parker Jerke gave the Flyers the lead on a goal from Jackson Breuer and Jacob Bergman 14 seconds into the period and Braedon Hitt scored from Tristan Lake and Jacob Bergman at 2:35 of the second period to give Sioux Falls West a 3-1 lead.

Hitt scored his second goal of the game on the power play from Breuer and Bergman at 4:34 of the third period to finish the game for the Flyers.

Ryder Anderson made 24 saves for the Rangers, who out-shot the Flyers 34-28. Brookings went 1-for-8 on the power play while Sioux Falls West converted both their power play opportunities.

Brookings 2, Oahe 0

PIERRE Both teams skated through a scoreless first period before Connor Hembree put the Rangers on the board with a goal from Connor Buckley at 15:18 of the second period.

Hahn added an insurance goal from Waylon Carroll 47 seconds into the third period and Matthew Bothe made 10 saves to earn the win.

Brookings out-shot the Capitals 24-10 and went 0-for-4 on the power play. The Capitals did not have a power play.

BANTAM B

FARGO The Rangers went 3-1, picking up wins over Moorhead White, Wayzata Royal, Coon Rapids and Mound Westonka at the Woodchipper tournament from Jan. 19 to Jan. 21.

Brookings 3, Moorhead White 2

The Rangers came from behind to win their first tournament game over Moorhead White on Friday afternoon.

Riddick Quam opened the scoring for the Rangers with 12:56 left in the first period with assists from Carter Nielson and Lucas Hovelson but Brookings took a 2-1 deficit into the third period.

Colt Van Maanen tied the game with an assist from Grant Horn with 15:00 left in the game and Nielsen scored with assists from Ty Harris and Jeremiah Hovey for the game-winner with 12:28 to play to lead the Rangers to victory.

Jon Drew made 33 saves in the win as the Rangers were out-shot 34-18.

Wayzata Royal 7, Brookings 0

The Rangers suffered their lone loss of the tournament to the Royals on Saturday afternoon. Jon Drew started and made 24 saves for the Rangers, who were out-shot 31-15.

Brookings 4, Coon Rapids 3

The Rangers defeated Coon Rapids in their second game of the tournament on Saturday night.

Colin Jacobson scored for the Rangers from Beau Luvaas and Landon Schumacher and Thatcher with 12:17 left in the first period and Thatcher Hastlehorst scored from Vanmaanen and Maxx Anderson to help the Rangers go into the first intermission tied at 2-2.

VanMaanen broke the tie with his goal from Hastlehorst with 6:09 left in the second period. Jeremiah Hovey added an insurance goal from Colin Jacobson with 41 seconds left in the second to preserve the win.

Jon Drew made seven saves for the Rangers, who out-shot Coon Rapids 31-10.

Brookings 4, Mound Westonka 3

The Rangers finished the tournament with a win, defeating Mound Westonka on Sunday morning.

Jeremiah Hovey put the Rangers on the board with an assist from Carter Nielson with 11:03 left in the second period. Grant Horn scored with an assist from Vanmaanen with 1:10 to go in the second period and Vanmaanen scored twice in the third period with an assist coming from Jacob and Hovey with 12:26 left in the third period and Horn with 8:01 left in the third period to earn the win.

Drew made 22 saves for the Rangers, who out-shot Mound Westonka 32-25.

PEEWEE A

The Rangers went 3-0 on the weekend picking up road wins over Yankton and Oahe and a home win against Aberdeen.

Brookings 7, Yankton 0

YANKTON Myles Anderson scored a goal and added an assist to help the Rangers defeat Yankton on Friday night.

The Rangers enjoyed a balanced scoring output in the win with Oliver Ahman, Graham Gerlach, Jasper Pitts, Luke Luvaas, Kallen Serfling and Weston Diers all scoring goals. Owen Rounds, Jager Jacobsma and Thor Zell each had one assist.

Warner Carroll started the game and made six saves through the first two periods before Isaac Hafschild finished the game and made two saves. The Rangers out-shot Yankton 45-8.

Brookings 3, Aberdeen 1

BROOKINGS The Rangers defeated the Cougars in their second game of the weekend at Brookings First Bank & Trust Rink in the Larson Ice Center on Saturday afternoon.

Ahmann put the Rangers on the board with an unassisted goal with 14:42 left in the second period before Serfling scored with assists from Gerlach and Blain Zweber with 13:46 remaining in the second period.

The Cougars cut into the lead with Collin Oswalds unassisted goal with five minutes left in the second period but Dierss third-period goal from Tegan Jensen with two minutes to play sealed the win.

Carroll made seven saves for the Rangers in the win. Brookings out-shot Aberdeen 26-7.

Brookings 8, Oahe 1

PIERRE The Rangers wrapped up the weekend with a win over Pierre on Sunday afternoon.

Diers recorded a hat trick to lead the Rangers while Serfling registered three assists. Ahmann scored twice while Zell had a goal and an assist and Rounds had two assists. Jensen and Jasper Pitts each had a goal while Anderson and Luvaas each had an assist.

Isaac Haufschild made four saves for the Rangers, who out-shot the Capitals 40-5.

PEEWEE B

BROOKINGS The Rangers earned a pair of wins at the Larson Ice Center over the weekend, with wins against Aberdeen and Sioux Center.

Brookings 3, Aberdeen 2 (OT)

Gavin Zweibahmer scored a pair of goals including the unassisted game-winner in overtime to lead the Rangers past the Cougars on Saturday morning. Liam Heiberger also scored a goal in the win and Pierson Rohl added an assist.

Brayden Brintnall made 25 saves for the Rangers. Brookings was out-shot by the Cougars 27-18.

Brookings 3, Sioux Center 2

The Rangers wrapped up the weekend with a win over the Storm on Sunday afternoon.

Branch Otteson put Brookings on the board with an unassisted goal with 11:08 to go in the first period and Jacob Myhre followed up with a goal from Rohl and Emmett Berkenhoff with 7:50 left in the first period to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Zweibahmer scored with an assist from Deacon Trumbo with 5:54 left in the second period and Brintnall made 18 saves to help the Rangers come away with a win.

Brookings out-shot the Storm 25-20 in the game.

SQUIRT A

MITCHELL The Rangers won a pair of games at the Toshiba Arena, defeating Oahe 11-0 and Mitchell 14-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Brookings 11, Oahe 0

Ryker Schumacher recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Rangers over the Capitals.

Brodie Bahe scored twice and added two assists while Colton Hendricks and Kaden Ziegeldorf each had a goal and two assists.

Sutton Jensen and Elliott Ahmann each had a goal and an assist while Finn Koenchne and Theo Treml each had a goal. Max Harris added two assists in the win and Juke Anderson made 5 saves. The Rangers out-shot the Capitals 26-5.

Brookings 14, Mitchell 1

Kaden Ziegeldorf had four goals while Jensen and Cooper Hyde had a hat trick and two assists to help the Rangers defeat the Marlins.

Anderson had two goals and an assist while Hendricks had a goal and two assists. Ahmann had a goal and an assist and Ryker Schumacher had two assists. Hendrix Schmeichel Collen Fogelson and Bahe each had an assist in the win.
