Local girls hockey: Brookings Rangers host Dakota Premier Classic

BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers had a busy weekend, playing five games in four days at the Brookings First Bank & Trust Rink at the Larson Ice Center.

The Rangers hosted the Dakota Premier 19U Classic, winning one of four games from Friday through Sunday and battled Oahe after a Jan. 13 matchup was postponed due to weather conditions.

Friday

Aberdeen 6, Brookings 3

Anna Rasmussen put the Rangers on the board early with a goal from Miyah Foerster with eight minutes left in the first period but Olivia Sandvigs goal 18 seconds later sent both teams into the second intermission tied at 1-1.

Morgan Jones scored with 10:58 remaining in the second period to give the Cougars the lead and Kaylyn Poppen scored on an unassisted goal 39 seconds later to put Aberdeen up 3-1. Kinzey Grendler cut into the lead with her goal from Ava Kahle with 6:57 to play in the second period but the Cougars would get goals from Kalin Hepper and Jones to build a 5-2 lead.

Poppen scored her second goal of the game with 14:47 left in the third period before Anna Rasmussen scored with 2:19 remaining to cap the scoring.

Rorii Quam started for the Rangers and made 35 saves. Brookings was out-shot by Aberdeen 41-19.

Saturday

Brookings 2, Sioux Center 0

Brookings used a pair of first-period goals to earn the win including Grendlers unassisted goal with 5:18 left in the first period. Khloe Ziegeldorf capped the scoring with a goal from Grendler and Graciana Peterson with 2:41 left in the first period and Quam stopped all 18 shots to earn the shutout.

Brookings out-shot Sioux Center 26-18.

Omaha 6, Brookings 4

Sawyer Triplett opened the scoring for Brookings with an unassisted goal with 10:15 left in the first period and doubled the lead with assists from Julissa Peterson and Ashton Otteson with 7:51 left in the first period.

Kylan Wyle answered for the Lancers with her goal with 3:27 left in the first period but the Rangers took a 3-1 lead on Tripletts third goal of the game from Julissa Peterson with 15:06 left in the second period.

Kiana Keu came through for Omaha with a natural hat trick, however, to give the Lancers a 4-3 lead before Julissa Peterson scored with four seconds left in the second period from Foerster and Triplett to send the game into the second intermission tied at 4-4.

But the Lancers got goals from Quinn Iverson and Wyle in the third period and the Rangers were kept off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

Quam stopped 27 shots for the Rangers, who out-shot the Lancers 31-18.

Sunday

Minnetonka 4, Brookings 0

Amanda Cronin scored twice for the Skippers while Mylee Greenley and Ava Klick each scored a goal to give Minnetonka the win.

Quam made 42 saves for the Rangers, who were out-shot 46-9.

Monday

Oahe 2, Brookings 1

Oahes Brylee Kafka put the Capitals on the board with a goal at 11:27 of the first period but Grendler answered with a goal from Rasmussen at 2:46 of the second period.

The game went to the third period tied at 1-1 when Cameron Larsons goal at 12:16 of the third period gave the Capitals the win.

Quam made 28 saves in the loss and both teams had 30 shots. The Capitals went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Rangers went 0-for-6.
