High school wrestling: Sioux Valley competes in quad, Kingsbury County Invite

ARLINGTON The Sioux Valley wrestling team had a busy weekend as it competed in a quadrangular with Kingsbury County, Lyman and Warner/Northwestern on Friday night and finished 12th in the Kingsbury County Invitational on Saturday.

The Cossacks will return to action when they take part in a quadrangular with Briton-Hecla, Arlington and Viborg-Hurley on Thursday night.

Friday

Kingsbury County 71, Sioux Valley 9

Tate Steffensen scored a win for the Cossacks with a 9-2 decision over Sutton Murphy at 132 pounds. Owen Vanderweerd also scored a pin over Sam Crowe at 285 pounds for Sioux Valley.

Wyatt Hardt lost a 16-1 technical fall to Kaleb Johnson at 150 pounds, Harvey Hardt was pinned in 15 seconds against Deion Harris at 165 pounds and Luke Johnson was pinned in 2:21 by Marshall Holz at 175 pounds.

Lyman 48, Sioux Valley 23

Vandeweerd pinned Louie Thury at 3:54 at 285 pounds and Wyatt Hardt pinned Aja Middletent in 1:36 at 150 pounds. Harvey Hardt earned a 17-2 technical fall over Jaydin Sorensen at 165 pounds.

Johnson was pinned by Rory McManus in 53 seconds at 175 pounds.

Warner/Northwestern 36, Sioux Valley 16

Steffensen pinned Austin Vetter in 1:10 at 132 pounds and Vandeweerd earned a 14-0 major decision over Brayden Satter at 285 pounds.

Johnson was pinned by Alex Pudwilli in 29 seconds at 190 pounds.

Saturday

The Cossacks finished in 12th place at the invitational with a team total of 36 points.

Steffensen finished in second place at 132 pounds and began his run by pinning Kingsbury Countys Lane Albrecht in 1:51 in the quarterfinals and Hamlin/Castlewoods John Yonker in 3:46 of the semifinals. Steffensen lost in an 18-3 tech fall to Nolan Miles of Brookings in the championship match.

Wyatt Hardt finished in sixth place for the Cossacks at 150 pounds.

Hardt was pinned by Brodyrck Gravdal at 3:38 of the quarterfinals before pinning Kingbury County teammates Kahne Hanson in 3:21 of the second round of the consolation bracket and Liam Gunnon in 38 seconds in the third round of the consolation bracket. Hardt was pinned by Redfield Areas Collin Dean in 4:57 of the first round of the consolation semifinals and Ipswich/Leola/Bowdles Beau Schilling in 3:53 of the fifth-place match.

Vandeweerd competed at 285 pounds and won one of his three matches, winning a 4-2 decision over Brookings Dylan Reynolds in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Harvey Hardt (165 pounds) and Johnson (175 pounds) also competed and went 0-2 at the tournament.
