Local boys hockey: Brookings Rangers rout Sioux Falls West, Oahe to remain undefeated

The Brookings Rangers improved to 9-0 on the season after picking up a paid of road victories over Oahe and Sioux Falls Westthis past weekend.

The Rangers will return home this weekend when they host Sioux Falls East on Friday night and Sioux Falls West on Saturday night at the Brookings First Bank & Trust Rink at the Larson Ice Center.

Brookings 7, Sioux Falls West 3

SIOUX FALLS The Rangers scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Flyers at the Scheels Ice Plex on Friday night.

Owen Schneider opened the scoring with a goal from Jacob Kahle and Luke Honkomp at 8:49 of the first period and Brookings ran its lead up to 3-0 on Riley Linstads goal from Cooper Deatherage and David Brink at 7:50 of the second period and Kahles goal from Honkomp and Riley Linstad at 11:11 of the second period.

That set the stage for a wild third period when both teams combined for seven total goals. The Flyers got back into the game with Jackson Henrys goal from Carson Sarahan and Carson Edwards at 1:01 of the third period and Beckett Haldes power play goal from Edwards and Tristan Lake at 6:07 of the third period.

With the Rangers holding onto a 3-2 lead, they created some space with Talon Hydes goal from Kahle and Brink at 8:56 of the third period and Kahles second goal of the game from Schneider at 13:18 of the third period.

Mason Schramm scored from Jackson Henry at 15:05 of the third period to cut the Rangers lead down to 5-3 but Kahle completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal at 15:51 of the third period and Jay Harris scored a power play goal from Hyde and Honkomp at 16:27 of the third period to secure the win.

Addison Ronning made 24 saves for the Rangers, who converted their lone power play opportunity and out-shot the Flyers 35-27.

Sioux Falls went 1-for-2 on the power play.

Brookings 8, Oahe 3

PIERRE The Rangers exploded late again for six goals in the third period to defeat the Capitals at the Oahe Expo Center on Saturday night.

Brookings took the lead on an unassisted goal by Kahle 15 seconds into the game but the Capitals tied the game on Devin Dodsons goal from Jarron Beck at 4:55 of the first period. Tre Christopherson put the Rangers back in front with an assist from Harris at 5:42 of the first period before Barret Schweitzers power play goal from Aidan Dozark and Andrew Coughlin tied the game at 2:38 of the second period.

The Rangers entered the third period tied at 2-2 but Ren Jacobsens power play goal from Harris at 2:42 put Brookings up for good. Linstad added a power play goal from Schneider and Honkomp at 4:09 of the third period and Kahle scored from Schneider on the power play at 6:10 to give the Rangers a 5-2 lead.

Schweitzer scored his second goal shorthanded at 7:54 of the third period to make it a 5-3 game but the Rangers finished strong using Schneiders goal from Honkomp and Kahle at 8:20 of the third period, Harriss power play goal from Schneider and Linstad at 12:51 of the third period and Kahles goal from Schneider at 14:27 of the third period to earn the win.

Egan Jensen made 13 saves for the Rangers, who out-shot the Capitals 31-16. Brookings went 4-for-13 on the power play while Oahe went 1-for-1 with the man advantage.
