High school wrestling: Brookings girls finish first, boys third at Kingsbury County Invite

ARLINGTON The Brookings Bobcats were among a 14-team field that took part in the Kingsbury County Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The girls team finished in first place at the tournament while the boys team finished in third place.

The Bobcats will return to action when they travel to Mitchell for a triangular with Sioux Falls Jefferson on Thursday night.

Girls

Brookings finished first at the invitational with a team score of 49 points. Sioux Falls Roosevelt finished second with 33 points while Groton Area finished third with 20 points and Ipswich/Leola/Bowdle and Sioux Falls Washington tied for fourth with 18 points.

Johanna Steinlicht finished first for Brookings, winning a 5-4 decision over Jaidynn Giedd in the first round and pinning Giedd in 3:47 in the second round at 145 pounds.

Maizy Mathis also finished first by winning both her matches, pinning Sioux Falls Jeffersons Macie Letsche in 1:49 and Britton-Heclas Cecilla Anderson in 59 seconds.

Claire Milliron finished in second place at 100 pounds after pinning Tiospa Zinas Reegan Cook in 47 seconds and Kingsbury Countys Jaylynn Johnson in 52 seconds. Milliron was pinned by Groton Areas Liza Krueger at 4:36 of her third round match.

MaKenna Hudy finished second in the 107/114-pound bracket pinning Sioux Falls Washingtons Payton Raastad in 2:39. Hudy was pinned by Sioux Falls Roosevelts SageLynn Culley at 3:01 of her third round match.

Cierra Strand finished in second place in the 132/138-pound bracket, pinning Saphera Reid of Sioux Falls Jefferson in 1:07 but losing by fall to Dolands Kyla Logan in 2:59 in the second round.

Ramsie Hinricher finished in fourth place in the 120/126-pound bracket after she was pinned by Ipswich/Leola/Bowdles Sophia Knittel in 1:38 in the first round, Olivia Kolbrek of Sioux Falls Washington in 5:35 in the second round and Sioux Falls Roosevelts Rachel Dagel at 5:26 of the third round.

Boys

The Bobcats finished in third place at the invite with 177.5 team points. Brookings finished behind Canby, who finished in first with 203 points and Kingsbury County, who finished second with 195.5 points. Faulkton Area finished fourth with 158.5 points and Redfield Area finished fifth with 137 points.

11 wrestlers placed at the tournament including Nolan Miles and Gabe Stern, who took home first place finishes in their respective brackets.

Miles finished first at 132 pounds and opened the tournament with an 18-3 tech fall over Kingsbury Countys Sutton Murphy. Miles pinned Kingsbury Countys Greyson Nielson in 3:44 in the semifinals before earning an 18-3 tech fall over Sioux Valleys Tate Steffensen in the championship.

Stern competed at 165 pounds and pinned Warner Northwesterns Dustin Dirksen in 1:51 in the quarterfinals, Lymans Rory McManus in 3:12 during the semifinals and Sioux Falls Washingtons Zander Eidern in 1:51 in the championship to win the tournament.

Tate Helmbolt finished second for the Bobcats at 113 pounds. Helmbolt pinned Redfield Areas Tate Neuharth in 51 seconds in the quarterfinals and earned a 16-1 tech fall over Daven Van Egen of Canby in the semifinals. Helmbolt dropped a 5-2 decision to Hamlin/Castlewoods Brody Randall in the championship match.

Jacob Milliron finished in second place at 120 pounds. Milliron pinned Faulkton Areas Tucker Baloun in 23 seconds in the quarterfinals and pinned Kingsbury Countys Cody Zell in 28 seconds in the semifinals before he was pinned by Canbys Eli Greenman in 2:45 of the championship match.

Logan Straub finished in second place at 157 pounds and opened the tournament by pinning Kingsbury Countys Jaun Guiterrez in 14 seconds during the quarterfinals and Kingsbury Countys Sheldon Balderston in 3:20 during the semifinals. Straub was pinned by Warner/Northwesterns Charlie Dulany in 58 seconds of the championship match.

Joey Fitzpatrick finished in second place at 190 pounds for the Bobcats pinning Groton Areas Drew Thurston in 57 seconds in the quarterfinals and Kingsbury Countys Breyten Johnson in 2:34 of the semifinal match. Fitzpatrick lost in a 5-4 decision to Canbys Nick Wagner in the championship match.

Micah Stern finished in fourth place at 106 pounds and opened the tournament by pinning Groton Areas Noah Scepaniak in 59 seconds during his first-round match. Stern won an 8-7 decision over Kingsbury Countys Chase Henriksen in the quarterfinals but lost to Groton Areas Wyatt Hagen in a 5-1 decision in the semifinals. Stern finished the tournament by pinning Faulkton Areas Logan Smith in 49 seconds in the consolation semifinals but was pinned by Canbys Cas Antony in 1:29 in the third-place match.

Mason Mathis finished fifth for the Bobcats at 144 pounds. After losing a 9-2 decision to Faulkton Areas Landon Coyle in the quarterfinals, Mathis lost a 3-2 decision to Britton-Heclas Bryce Hawkinson in the consolation semifinals before defeating Hamlin/Castlewoods Tate Everson in a 7-1 decision in the fifth place match.

Sawyer Johnson finished in sixth place for Brookings at 126 pounds. Johnson was pinned by Redfield Areas Conner Zens at 2:47 of his quarterfinal match but defeated Groton Areas Donavan Block by a 10-7 decision in the third round of the consolation bracket. Johnson finished the tournament by getting pinned by Canbys Issac Guzman at 1:25 in the consolation semifinals and Groton Areas Walker Zoellner at 1:31 of the fifth-place match.

Jurren Hansen finished in sixth place at 138 pounds. Hansen lost a 12-3 major decision to Favian Rivas/Wells of Sioux Falls Washington in the quarterfinals and was pinned in 28 seconds by Braydon Oldenkamp in the consolation semifinals. Hansen closed the tournament by dropping an 8-5 decision to Redfield Areas Ayden Understock in the fifth-place match.

Blake Kannegieter finished in sixth place at 165 pounds and pinned Lymans Jaydin Sorensen in 41 seconds in the first round. Kannegieter was pinned by Zander Eidem of Sioux Falls Washington in 3:21 in the quarterfinals before pinning Sioux Valleys Harvey Hardt in 2:31 of the second round of the consolation bracket and winning an 8-6 decision over Britton-Heclas Ben Suther in the third round of the consolation bracket.

Kannegieter was pinned by Lymans Rory McManus in 1:50 of the consolation semifinals and was pinned by Warner/Northwesterns Dustin Dirksen at 1:15 of the fifth-place match.
