High school boys basketball: Cossacks improve to 11-0 with victory over Rapid City Christian

MITCHELL Alec Squires and Max Engebretson each put together strong performances on Saturday night and Sioux Valley improved to 11-0 on the season with a 71-65 victory over Rapid City Christian at the Hanson Classic.

Squires was 9-of-13 from the field and had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cossacks. Engebretson was 6-of-9 from three and had 22 points and five assists.

Sioux Valley led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter. Each team then scored 15 points in the second quarter and the Cossacks took a 35-33 lead into halftime. The two teams matched each other in the third quarter as well and Sioux Valley led 49-47 heading into the fourth. The Cossacks built a bit of a lead in the fourth and were able to come away with a six-point victory.

Sioux Valley shot 55.3% from the field and was 8-of-18 from three. Maverick NElson and Hudsyn Ruesink each had eight points.

Rapid City Christian shot 37.7% from the field and was 5-of-22 from three. The Comets were led by Simon Kieffer who had 24 points. Julius Frog had 19 points and Aiden Roberts had 12 points.

The Cossacks won the rebound battle 32-28. Sioux Valley had 14 turnovers and Rapid City Christian had seven. The Cossacks were 11-of-15 at the free throw line and the Comets were 14-of-19 at the charity stripe.

Sioux Valley will be off until Thursday, when the Cossacks will play at McCook Central/Montrose at 7:30 p.m.
