The Bobcats struggled to take care of the basketball with 28 turnovers in the game and allowed a 22-0 run in the first half as they dropped their first game of the weekend to the Cobblers 78-67 on Friday night.

I thought we were prepared for what we knew we were going to see, Brookings head coach Mitch McLagan said. Our youth showed up a little bit and 28 turnovers is unacceptable at any level.

The Cobblers opened the game on a 10-2 run before the Bobcats answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 10, but RC Central scored the final 17 points of the opening frame to take a 27-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. With 10 turnovers, the Cobblers dictated the pace of the game and scored the first five points of the second quarter to complete the run.

We turned the ball over too many times and allowed them to dictate the pace of play, McLagan said. It started with the turnovers and then we didnt defend very hard on the other end.

Macy Evens bucket with 5:41 left in the second quarter ended the run but Brookings played catch-up the rest of the way. Rapid City Central went into halftime with a 42-26 lead and a 65-50 lead at the end of the third quarter. While the Bobcats cut the lead down to 71-61 with 3:43 left to play, that would be the closest they would get as the Cobblers closed out the game.

After the game, McLagan admitted there was plenty of work to do but also complimented the Bobcats on their ability to keep fighting in the second half.

We won the second quarter, third quarter and fourth quarter but we just cant put ourselves in that big of a hole in the first quarter, McLagan said. We talked about it in the locker room at halftime and after the game that we just needed to get tougher and credit to our kids, they were tougher in the second half. We just have to do a better job of being ready to play and show that toughness at tipoff.

Logan Smidt had 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal for the Bobcats while Tess Burns had 12 points, seven rebounds, a block and an assist. Even finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block and Amari Ward had seven points, two rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.

The Bobcats played well and took the lead into the half but some similar issues popped up to help the Raiders score a 59-46 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but out-scored the Raiders 17-12 in the second quarter to lead 25-22 at halftime. The most impressive aspect was the Bobcats defense, which held the Raiders to just 20 percent shooting in the first half.

We were able to be more prepared for this game even with the odd start time, McLagan said. We werent able to do a walkthrough this morning, so credit to our kids for understanding the assignment and coming out with more energy to start the game.

While the Bobcats got off to a good start, they couldnt finish the job thanks to six turnovers in the third quarter. The Raiders took advantage to lead 39-34 at the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 10 points in the fourth before securing the victory.

They did a better job of taking away shots in the second half, McLagan said of the Raiders. Their pressure got us to play fast and I thought they forced us into taking shots we didnt want.

Even and Buys led the Bobcats with nine points each and Even added five rebounds to help the cause. Burns, Ward and Brinleigh Mack each had six points and Mack also grabbed five rebounds.

Taaliyah Porter led Rapid City Stevens with 26 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Isabell Higgins had 10 points and six rebounds.

While McLagan was disappointed with the result and the Bobcats five-game losing streak that has dropped them to 2-8 on the season, he remained encouraged based on the improvement over the weekend.

When you just look at today compared to last night, we came out with much better energy and played better basketball, McLagan said. But youve got to get to a point where the energy thing cant be a light switch. Its got to come every single day in practice. You cant take days off because then this stuff starts to snowball a little bit. With a young team, a losing streak can wear on you so weve got to make sure our kids are ready to go.

The Bobcats will return to action when they host Harrisburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Despite the result, the game had several positives for the Bobcats including Owen Burns, who put up a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
