Local hockey: Brookings Rangers’ Girls 14U, Squirt Red earn wins, PeeWee Blue splits in Austin

Cold weather limited the schedule for the Brookings Rangers last weekend, but they still saw success with the girls 14U and boys squirt red teams picking up wins and the peewee blue heading to a tournament in Austin, Minn.

GIRLS 14U

Brookings 3, Aberdeen 0

BROOKINGS The Rangers got on the board early and scored twice in the third period to defeat the Cougars at the Larson Ice Center on Sunday afternoon.

Kinley Foerster put Brookings on the board with a goal from Lorelei Koch at 12:11 of the first period before both teams skated through a scoreless second period. Khloe Ziegeldorf gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead with assists from Brooke Kruse and Katie Vandersnick at 8:30 of the third period before Koch scored the final goal from Allie Jacobson at 10:51 of the third period.

Avery Dentlinger stopped all 21 shots for the shutout as the Rangers out-shot Aberdeen 25-21. Neither team had a power play opportunity.

SQUIRT RED

Brookings 5, Brandon Valley 2

BRANDON Knox Frericks had a hat trick and Joey Francisco scored twice to lead the Rangers over the Ice Cats on Sunday afternoon.

Francisco also added three assists while Jordyn Ballis added an assist in on Franciscos goal in the first period.

Nash Billings stopped 12 shots to earn the win. Both teams had 14 shots in the game.

PEEWEE BLUE

AUSTIN, Minn. The Rangers took part in the Tyler Brady Memorial Tournament at Packer Arena from Jan. 12-14. Brookings split its four games at the tournament, picking up wins over Albert Lea and Orono but falling to Shakopee and Wayzata.

Shakopee 4, Brookings 1

The Sabers jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Jacek Newman and Logan Brown scored in the first period and Brown scored another goal in the second and third periods. Liam Heiberger scored the lone goal for Brookings late in the game with an unassisted marker with 1:38 to play.

Brayden Brintnall stopped 28 shots in the game while the Rangers were out-shot 32-17.

Brookings 1, Albert Lea 0

Gavin Zweibahmer scored the lone goal in the game with an unassisted marker with 44 seconds left in the second period.

Brintnall stopped 47 shots to earn the shutout as the Rangers were out-shot 47-13.

Wayzata 6, Brookings 2

Wayzata got on the board with Jacob Shores goal in the first period and extended the lead with Lucas Mikhalchenkos goal in the second period. Hudson Boldt scored to make it 4-0 before Jacob Myhre scored to bring the Rangers within 4-1.

Boldt scored his second goal of the game with one second left in the second period however and added another goal with 5:49 to play in the third period. Wyatt Matthews added a goal for good measure before Branch Otteson scored with an assist from Deacon Trumbo with 3:17 left in the game.

Brintnall made 34 saves in the game while the Rangers were out-shot 40-21.

Brookings 3, Orono 0

The Rangers ended the tournament on a good note by defeating Orono on Sunday afternoon.

Pierson Rohl scored on an assist from Heiberger with 7:53 left in the first period before the Rangers doubled their lead on Zweibahmers goal from Jackson Hahn and Trumbo with 5:49 left in the first period.

Both teams skated through a scoreless second period before Spencer Lovseth scored the final goal of the game unassisted with 9:45 left in the third period.

Brintnall made all 39 saves in the win while the Rangers were out-shot 39-28.
