BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers picked up one of their biggest wins of the season when they defeated Aberdeen 1-0 at the First Bank & Trust Rink at the Larson Ice Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars came into Sundays game with a 7-1 record and were tied for first place in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association but the Rangers got on the board early when Anna Rasmussen scored on a shorthanded goal at 12:56 of the first period.
The rest of the game was a defensive battle that saw Brookings lean on goaltender Rorii Quam. Although the Cougars only out-shot the Rangers 11-7 in the first period, they had a 17-1 shots advantage in the second period and an 11-4 advantage in the third period on the way to a 39-12 advantage in the game.
Quam stopped all 39 of Aberdeens shots to earn the shutout and helped the Rangers improve to 5-4 on the season.
After Saturdays game with Oahe was postponed, the Rangers will return to action on Feb. 2 when they host Sioux Falls at the Larson Ice Center.
