High school wrestling: Brookings Bobcats finish second at West Sioux Invite

HAWARDEN, Iowa The Brookings Bobcats finished second at the West Sioux Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats scored 211 points at the invite and finished behind West Central (Iowa), who finished in first place with 244.5 points.

Sioux Falls Lincoln finished third with 185 points, West Sioux (Iowa) finished in fourth place with 173 points and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock finished in fifth place with 145.5 points.

The Bobcats had four wrestlers finish in first place at the invite including Jacob Milliron at 120 pounds.

Milliron pinned Kingsley-Piersons Evan Jogodzinske at 2:51 of his quarterfinal match and Hayden Brown of Cherokee, Washington 32 seconds into his semifinal match. Milliron finished off the invite by pinning Reid Persinger of West Sioux at 4:48 of the championship match.

Nolan Miles finished in first place at 132 pounds by winning all four matches at the invite. Miles pinned Philip Monroe of MOC-Floyd Valley at 1:38 of their first-round match and picked up another pin over West Siouxs Ethan Schurman at 2:50 of his quarterfinal match. Miles pinned Wyatt Johnson of Cherokee, Washington at 3:33 in the semifinals and won a 5-2 decision over Lincolns Bentley Williams in the championship.

Gabe Stern finished in first place at 175 pounds by winning all three of his matches in the invite. Stern pinned Oden Nohava of West Sioux at 1:10 of their quarterfinal match and won by injury default at 4:20 of a semifinal match against MOC-Floyd Valleys Carter Peterson. Stern won the title by winning a 10-3 decision over Cherokee, Washingtons Logan Allender.

Joey Fitzpatrick was the final first-place finisher for the Bobcats by winning the 190 pound bracket. Fitzpatrick pinned Kingley-Piersons Ayden Socknat 36 seconds into the quarterfinals and pinned MMC/RUs Mason Grage at 1:11 in the semifinals. Fitzpatrick picked up a third pin by defeating Seth Persinger of West Sioux at 2:42 of the championship match.

Tate Helmbolt finished in second place at 113 pounds for the Bobcats. Helmbolt pinned Lucas Linn of Cherokee, Washington in eight seconds in the semifinals before dropping a 9-7 decision to Lincolns Josiah Kauffman in the championship.

Logan Straub finished in second place at 157 pounds. Straub won in sudden victory 11-6 over Central Lyon/George-Littles Egan Pedersen in the quarterfinals and advanced to the championship by pinning Cherokee, Washingtons Tru Timmerman at 4:31 of the semifinals. Straub was pinned by West Centrals Keaton Vessells at 4:54 of the championship match.

Levi Quam finished third at 120 pounds. Quam won by a 9-5 decision over West Siouxs Preston Province in the quarterfinals before he was pinned by Reid Persinger of West Sioux in the semifinals. Quam pinned Jagodzinske at 1:32 of the consolation semifinals and pinned Province at 4:48 of the third-place match.

Mason Mathis finished third at 144 pounds. Mathis won by a 6-3 decision over Dominic Schmitz of MOC-Floyd Valley in the first round but lost in sudden victory to West Centrals Langdon Klinkhammer 4-2 in the quarterfinals. Mathis won by fall over MMC/RUs Parker Glassmaker at 4:37 in the third round of the consolation bracket, West Siouxs Zac Finzen at 1:52 of the consolation semifinals and won a 1-0 decision over Lane Kruger of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock in the third place match.

Blake Kannegieter finished third at 165 pounds for Brookings despite dropping a 9-7 decision in his first round match against Jack Mullins of Cherokee, Washington. Kannegieter pinned West Centrals Braxton Huber at 2:23 of his second-round consolation match, Brookings Zach Hagemann at 2:47 of the third round of the consolation bracket and Jack Mullins at 1:12 in the consolation semifinal bracket before pinning West Siouxs Eli Koopmans at 3:32 of the third place match.

Dylan Reynolds finished in fourth place after going 2-2 at the invite. Reynolds was pinned by Sam Christensen at 1:39 of his quarterfinal match before pinning Cohen Bloemers of MOC-Floyd Valley at 3:47 of his third-round consolation match and Lincolns Braden Petersen at 1:11 of his consolation semifinal match. Reynolds was pinned at 1:17 of his third-place match with Gavin Pischke.

Micah Stern finished in fifth place at 106 pounds after going 1-2 at the tournament. Stern pinned Weston Johnson of Cherokee Washington at 1:00 in the fifth-place match.

Jack Griggs finished seventh at 132 pounds by going 3-2 at the tournament. Griggs pinned MMC/RUs Max Pepper in 41 seconds in the first round and Bryce Burke of Kingsley-Pierson at 2:38 in the second round of the consolation bracket before winning a 5-3 decision over West Siouxs Ethan Schurman in the seventh-place match.

James Fitzpatrick finished in seventh place after going 1-2 at the invite. Fitzpatrick pinned Brookingss Julian Palo at 1:55 in the seventh-place match.

Zach Hagemann finished in seventh place at 165 pounds and went 1-2 at the invite. Hagemann pinned Pablo De Hoogh of MOC-Floyd Valley at 1:13 of the seventh-place match.

Carson Loehr finished in seventh place at 215 pounds and went 2-2 at the invitational. Loehr pinned Isaias Bautista at 1:13 in the second round of the consolation bracket and pinned Sean Comstock of Cherokee, Washington at 2:24 of the seventh-place match.

Sawyer Johnson competed at 126 pounds and finished 0-3 at the tournament.

Julian Palo competed at 150 pounds and finished 0-3 at the tournament.

The Bobcats will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Huron.
