Local hockey roundup: Brookings Rangers head into the new year

The Brookings Rangers had another busy weekend as the boys JV and Bantam teams picked up some wins and the Squirt teams hosted the Dakota Premier Classic to ring in the new year.

BOYS JV

The Rangers picked up a pair of wins on the road last weekend, defeating Watertown 6-1 at the MAAS Ice Arena on Dec. 29 and Yankton 7-4 at the Yankton Ice Rink on Dec. 30.

Brookings 6, Watertown 1

WATERTOWN Parker Nielsen scored with an assist from Andrew Hahn at 10:12 of the first period to put the Rangers on the board and Cody Jacobson scored a pair of goals, the first coming from Masen Holen and Cooper Schneider at 2:15 and the second coming from Cody Jacobson at 8:03, in the second period to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead.

Tyson Lawrence put Watertown on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:31 of the third period but the Rangers scored three goals in the final eight minutes to put the game away.

Parker Nielsen scored from Hahn and Connor Buckley at 10:07, Holen scored from Gavin Loy and Schneider at 11:31 and Waylon Carroll scored from Caleb Johnson at 16:17 in the third period.

Matthew Bothe stopped 17 shots for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot Watertown 39-18 and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Watertown did not have a power play attempt.

Brookings 7, Yankton 4

YANKTON Carroll scored an unassisted goal at 4:01 of the first period to put Brookings on the board but Cooper Larsen tied it with an assist from Jace Sedlacek at 9:36.

Hahn scored a pair of goals from Mavrick Bortnem at 13:47 of the first period and Nielsen at 15:09 of the second period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead at the first intermission and completed the natural hat trick with an assist from Nielsen at 4:51 of the second period to put Brookings up 4-1.

Sedlacek scored an unassisted goal for Yankton at 6:42 of the second period and Kade Schramm scored from Wyatt Johnson at 13:19 of the second period to make it a 4-3 game. But the Rangers scored three unanswered goals to put the game away from there as Hahn scored with assists from Buckley and Nielsen at 13:50 of the second period, Connor Hembree scored on an assist from Schneider at 6:48 of the third period and Carroll scored an unassisted goal at 10:06 of the third period. Dawsn Thomas scored the games final goal for Yankton unassisted at 10:47 of the third period.

Ryder Anderson stopped 15 shots to earn the win for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot Yankton 28-19 and went 2-for-3 on the power play. Yankton converted on their lone power play attempt.

BANTAM A

The Rangers picked up two wins over the weekend, defeating Oahe 7-1 at the Fort Pierre Expo Center on Dec. 30 and Watertown 10-1 at the MAAS Ice Arena on Dec. 31.

Brookings 7, Oahe 1

PIERRE Both teams skated through a scoreless first period before Carson Kludt scored from Mauer Bartley 24 seconds into the second period. Kludt scored again with assists from Bartley and Krogman to give Brookings a 2-0 lead and it set the tone for a five-goal second period for the Rangers.

Jason Ready scored with an assist from Barkley to put Brookings up 3-0 at 7:52 of the third period, Jack Lovseth scored at 11:10 from Mason Diers and Connon Friedrich at 11:10 of the third period and Ethan Foerster scored from Maxten Jensen at 12:45 of the second period to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead at the second intermission.

Ready scored his second goal of the game from Bartley and Cade Zweber at 2:10 of the third period to give Brookings a 6-0 lead and Zweber scored an unassisted goal to make it 7-0 at 6:29 of the third period. Kaden Walti scored Oahes lone goal at 7:52 of the third period.

Neil Trygstad made five saves to earn the win for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot the Capitals 45-6. Brookings went 0-for-1 on the power play while the Oahe did not have a power play attempt.

Brookings 10, Watertown 0

WATERTOWN Kludt put the Rangers on the board with a pair of goals in the first period, scoring an unassisted goal at 5:09 and a goal from Ready and Bartley at 12:08.

Bartley kicked off a five-goal second period for the Rangers, scoring from Ready and Krogman 29 seconds into the second frame. Atwood Ahmann scored from Lovseth and Diers at 1:28 of the second period to extend the lead and Krogman scored from Jensen at Diers at 6:02 of the second period. Diers scored an unassisted goal at 7:04 and Bartley scored his second goal of the game from Kludt at 12:43 to give the Rangers a 7-0 lead at the second intermission.

Krogman, Zweber and Jensen all scored unassisted goals in the third period to wrap the game up for the Rangers.

Trygstad made all five saves to earn the shutout for Brookings. The Rangers out-shot Watertown 40-5. Brookings went 1-for-5 on the power play while Watertown went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

BANTAM B

The Rangers picked up a pair of wins, defeating Oahe 3-1 at the Fort Pierre Expo Center on Dec. 30 and Watertown at the MAAS Ice Arena on Dec. 31.

Brookings 3, Pierre 1

PIERRE Brylon Beck opened the scoring with a shorthanded, unassisted goal at 2:50 of the second period before Brookings scored three unanswered goals to secure the win.

Thatcher Haselhorst tied the game with an assist from Colt Vanmaanen at 4:53 of the second period and Maxximillion Vanderbush scored from Haselhorst to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 9:14 of the second period.

Vanmaanen capped the scoring with an assist from Maxx Anderson at 13:45 of the third period.

Jon Drew made seven saves to earn the win for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot Pierre 22-8. The Rangers went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Capitals went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Brookings 9, Watertown 0

WATERTOWN The Rangers scored four times in the first period including three goals from Vanmaanen. Vanmaanen put the Rangers on the board with an assist from Ty Harris at 2:38 of the first period before scoring at 6:10 with an assist from Landon Schumacher and at 7:41 with an assist from Collin Jacobson.

Jacobson scored with assists from Harris and Lucas Hovelson to give the Rangers a 4-0 lead at the end of the first intermission and the Rangers poured it on with three more goals in the second period.

Vanmaanen scored his fourth goal of the game unassisted on the power play at 3:48 of the second period to make it 5-0 Rangers before Harris scored from Hovelson at 6:16 and Grant Horn scored from Haselhorst at 12:45 to give Brookings a 7-0 lead at the second intermission.

Hovelson scored from Vanmaanen at 6:59 of the third period and Jacobson scored an unassisted goal at 14:59 of the third period to cap the scoring.

Drew made three saves to earn the shutout for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot Watertown 50-3. The Rangers went 1-for-1 on the power play while the Lakers did not have a power play attempt.

GIRLS 14U

BROOKINGS The Rangers dropped a pair of games last week, falling to Watertown 3-2 on Dec. 29 and to the Mitchell Marlins 3-2 on Dec. 30. Both games were played at the First Bank and Trust Rink at the Larson Ice Center.

Watertown 3, Brookings 2 (OT)

Emily Meyer put the Rangers on the board with a shorthanded goal at 13:12 of the first period and Khloe Ziegeldorf gave Brookings a 2-0 lead with a goal from Kinley Foerster at 2:31 of the second period.

The Lakers stormed back with a pair of goals in the third period as Emma Schleusner scored from Gracelyn Webb at 3:52 and Lily Murray tied the game with an assist from Webb at 13:50. Schleusner scored the game-winning goal from Murray at 5:15 of overtime.

Audrey Andal made 21 saves in the loss for Brookings. The Lakers out-shot the Rangers 24-16 and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Brookings went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Mitchell 3, Brookings 2

Lyla Morrison put Mitchell on the board with an unassisted goal 38 seconds into the game but Allie Jacobson tied the game with a goal from Brooke Kruse and Brooklyn Nelson at 3:15 of the second period.

Gina Wyatt scored a pair of goals to give Mitchell a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Khloe Ziegeldorf scored a goal from Foerster and Kruse at 1:44 of the third period to cut into the lead but the Rangers couldnt find the equalizer.

Avery Dentlinger made 19 saves in the loss. Brookings out-shot Mitchell 26-22. Mitchell went 0-for-1 on the power play and Brookings did not have a power play opportunity.

PEEWEE B

Brookings 12, Pierre 3

PIERRE The Rangers won their lone game of the weekend, defeating Oahe 12-3 at the Fort Pierre Expo Center on Dec. 30.

Liam Heiberger had a hat trick and an assist while Spencer Lovseth had a goal and three assists. Gavin Zwibahmer and Jacob Mygre each had two goals and an assist for Brookings while Deacon Trumbo scored two goals.

Pierson Rohl had a goal and an assist while Branch Otteson had a goal. Porter Vanderbush and Adrian Almhjeld each had an assist.

Brayden Brintnall made three saves for the Rangers, who out-shot Oahe 40-3.

SQUIRT A

BROOKINGS The Rangers finished with a 1-3 record and finished in second place at the Dakota Premier Classic at the Larson Ice Center from Dec. 29 to Dec. 31.

Brookings 8, Minnesota River 3

The Rangers picked up a win in their first game of the tournament against Minnesota River on Dec. 29.

Sutton Jensen had a hat trick for the Rangers while Cooper Hyde scored twice. Brodie Bahe and Max Harris each had a goal and an assist while Finn Konechne also scored a goal. Hendrix Schmeichel, Elliott Ahmann and Kaden Ziegeldorf each had an assist.

Juke Anderson made six saves in the win. Brookings out-shot Minnesota River 28-9.

Marshall 10, Brookings 0

The Rangers lost their second game of the tournament to Marshall on Dec. 30. Anderson made seven saves for Brookings.

Luverne 3, Brookings 2

The Rangers dropped their third game of the tournament to Luverne on Dec. 30.

Ryker Schumacher scored with an assist from Colton Hendricks in the first period and Hendricks scored a goal from Jensen in the third period.

Anderson made 15 saves in the loss. The Rangers out-shot the Cardinals 20-18.

Marshall 4, Brookings 3 (OT)

The Rangers fell to Marshall in the championship game on Dec. 31.

Harris scored from Ahmann and Schumacher scored from Kaden Ziegeldorf and Schmeichel in the first period. Schumacher scored from Harris and Jensen in the second period.

Juke Anderson made 29 saves while Marshall out-shot Brookings 33-11.

SQUIRT RED

BROOKINGS The Rangers took part in the Dakota Premier Classic Tournament at the Larson Ice Center from Dec. 29 to Dec. 31. Brookings went 1-3 at the tournament.

Worthington 7, Brookings 0

The Rangers dropped their first game of the tournament to Worthington on Dec. 29.

Nash Billings made 30 saves in goal for the Rangers. Brookings was out-shot 37-3.

Brookings B3 3, Brookings Squirt Red 2

The Rangers dropped their second game of the tournament to the Brookings B3 Mites team on Dec. 30.

Joey Francisco scored a goal from Sydney Hahn at 1:29 of the second period and Knox Frericks scored an unassisted goal in the third period.

The Rangers outshot Brookings B3 17-6. Billings made 14 saves for the Rangers.

The Brookings B3 Mites team was a replacement in the tournament. No game sheets were submitted for their games as they went 1-2 at the tournament.

MBA Storm 16, Brookings 0

The Rangers dropped their third game of the tournament to the MBA Storm on Dec. 30. Billings made 40 saves for the Rangers. Brookings was out-shot 54-1.

Brookings Squirt Red 4, Brookings Squirt Blue 3

Joey Francisco and Knox Frericks scored two goals each and Frericks added a pair of assists to help the Squirt Red team defeat the Squirt Blue team in the final game of the tournament.

Otto Haselhorst scored for the Blue team on an assist by Graham Itterman in the first period and scored another goal in the second period. Hunter Vincent also scored a goal in the third period.

Billings made 34 saves for the Red team. Henry Dangel made 11 saves for the Blue team. The Red team out-shot the Blue team 37-14

SQUIRT BLUE

BROOKINGS The Rangers took part in the Dakota Premier Classic at the Larson Ice Center from Dec. 29 to Dec. 31. Brookings went 0-4 at the tournament.

Fargo Green 15, Brookings 3

The Rangers dropped their first game of the tournament to Fargo Green on Dec. 29.

Avery Swisher had a goal and an assist while Hunter Vincent and Itterman each had a goal for the Rangers.

Sarantis Theodosopoulos had 16 saves for the Rangers. Brookings was out-shot 31-7.

Grand Forks White 13, Brookings 0

The Rangers dropped their second game of the tournament to Grand Forks White on Dec. 30.

Dangel made 21 saves for the Rangers, who were out-shot 34-10.

Brandon Valley 8, Brookings 7

The Rangers dropped their third game of the tournament to the Ice Cats on Dec. 30.

Swisher recorded a hat trick while Itterman and Vincent each had a goal and an assist. Haselhorst also scored a goal in the loss.

Theordosopoulos made 10 saves for the Rangers, who were out-shot 18-16.
