College women’s basketball: Paige Meyers 37 points fuels Jackrabbits’ double OT win at Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. Paige Meyer scored a career-high 37 points and South Dakota State used a 17-4 run in the final 5:41 of regulation to fuel a 110-102 double overtime win over Northern Arizona on Tuesday night.

The game got off to a fast start as SDSU took a 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lumberjacks responded to take a 43-42 lead into halftime and took a 74-67 lead after closing the third quarter with a 10-3 run.

Northern Arizona opened the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run and opened up an 84-71 lead on a pair of free throws from Sophie Glancey 84-71 with 5:41 left in the fourth quarter.

SDSU used a 15-2 run from that point to tie the game at 86 on Madysen Vlastuins 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in regulation but Northern Arizona took the lead back on a pair of free throws by Olivia Moran with nine seconds to go.

With Brooklyn Meyer fouling out after scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, Paige Meyer took over with a layup with four seconds to go that tied the game at 88-88 and sent it to overtime.

Both teams struggled to generate offense in the first overtime and went into the second overtime tied at 93. While Paige Meyer paced the offense Mesa Byom was one of several players that stepped up, scoring five points and pulling down 12 rebounds off the bench and picking up three of her five blocks in the second overtime.

The team effort showed up when Taylor Feldman scored a pair of free throws to cut SDSUs lead down to 101-99 with 1:59 left in the second overtime. A 3-pointer by Madison Mathiowetz gave the Jacks a 106-99 lead with 1:18 to go and SDSU stayed in front for good using a pair of free throws from Paige Meyer and a layup by Byom to put the game away.

Paige Meyer and Brooklyn Meyer were two of five SDSU players to score in double figures as Nelson scored 12 points to go with four rebounds, three assists a block and a steal and Mathiowetz and Vlastuin each finished with 11 points.

The Jacks shot 53 percent from the floor and 9-for-21 (43%) on 3-pointers. SDSU also went 21-of-28 (75%) from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 51-41 while committing 13 turnovers.

The win helped the Jackrabbits improve to 8-5 on the season ahead of their second matchup in the Big SkySummit Challenge against Montana State at Frost Arena on Saturday afternoon.
