Coffeehouse tips go to Brookings Ministerial Association
BROOKINGS The Mission of the Month at the Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church for January is The Brookings Ministerial Association.
The Brookings Ministerial Association is an ecumenical cooperative organization with a long history of assisting unhoused people with gasoline, a motel room, food and medicine. The association is comprised of representatives from churches in Brookings and the surrounding area.
The association receives its funding from local churches and three community events: the community Lenten lunches at First Lutheran Church, the community Thanksgiving service, and an offering collected at the Sunday morning service associated with the Summer Arts Festival.
Assistance is provided to those in need through the use of a voucher system. A church completes a voucher listing the persons name and other identification and the type of assistance being offered. The voucher is verified by law enforcement then taken to a hotel, gas station or grocery store.
Over the past year, the ministerial association has received an increased number if requests. This ecumenical, multi-church, cooperative effort is one of the only immediately available, emergency resources in our community for those seeking assistance and a sign of hope.
