The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team improved to 11-0-1 on the season as they won three games over the weekend.
The Rangers beat Mayville (North Dakota) 8-1 on Dec. 28 in the Winter Classic in West Fargo. They then beat Watertown 7-0 on Dec. 29 and Yankton 4-2 on Dec. 30.
Dec. 28
Brookings 8, Mayville 1
The Rangers scored two goals in the first period. The first came from Jacob Kahle and it was assisted by Owen Schneider and David Brink. The next one came on the power play from Riley Linstad and it was assisted by Luke Honkomp and Jay Harris.
The Rangers extended their lead to 7-1 in the second period. Kahle scored his second goal to make it 3-0 and this time it was unassisted. Talon Hyde then made it 5-0 with back-to-back goals. His first goal was assisted by Schneider and Kahle and the second one was assisted by Harris and Linstad on the power play.
Jacob Law scored to make it 6-0 and it was assisted by Brink. Mayville scored its only goal of the game in the second period but Cooper Deatherage made it 7-1 heading into the third period as Linstad had the assist.
Hyde would pick up the hat trick and the final goal of the game in the third period. Linstad and Honkomp had the assists on the final goal.
Brookings outshot Mayville 49-11. Addison Ronning had 10 saves for the Rangers.
Dec. 29
Brookings 7, Mitchell 0
Brookings went up 3-0 in the first period. Hyde picked up right where he left off as he scored the first goal and Kahle and Brink assisted it. Schneider put the Rangers up 2-0 and Hyde had an assist. Law scored the final goal of the period and Harris and Brink assisted his goal.
The Rangers added two more goals in the second period. Jackson Heller put one in the back of the net to make it 4-0 and it was unassisted. Ren Jacobsen then made it 5-0 and the goal was assisted by Linstad.
The final two goals came in the third. Heller scored his second goal of the game and it was assisted by Harris and Law. Kahle then got in on the scoring and Hyde got another assist.
Brookings had 35 shots and Egan Jensen had 13 saves for the Rangers.
Dec. 30
Brookings 4, Yankton 2
The Rangers opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period. Jack Merritt put the Rangers in front and it was a power play goal and Jacobsen and Kahle picked up assists. Heller then doubled the lead for Brookings and Tre Christopherson had the assist on the second goal.
Brookings led 3-1 at the end of the second period. Hyde stretched the lead to 3-0 with a power play goal that was assisted by Linstad and Schneider. Ashton Renked scored for the Bucks to make it 3-1 and his goal was assisted by Tucker Renken.
Kylen OConnor cut the Brookings lead to 3-2 in the third period and his goal was assisted by Cooper Larsen and Jace Sedlacek. Schneider then put the game away for the Rangers just under two minutes later as he put one in the back of the net and Kahle picked up the assist.
Brookings had 57 shots and Yankton had 14. Ronning made 12 saves.
