SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bobcats took part in the 2023 Floyd Farrand Holiday Invitational at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School on Saturday afternoon.
The girls team finished in fourth place at the tournament while the boys team finished in ninth place.
The Bobcats will return to action on Jan. 9 when the travel for a dual with Huron.
Boys
Brookings finished ninth in the tournament with 96 team points. Watertown took home first place with a team total of 221 points while Brandon Valley finished second at 146 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln finished third with 139 points, Milbank finished fourth with 116 points and Beresford/Alcester-Hudson finished fifth with 113 points.
Tate Helmbolt finished in first place for the Bobcats by winning all three of his matches at 113 points. Helmbolt won by an 18-3 technical fall over Vermillions Landon Sopoci in the quarterfinals before winning a 7-0 decision over Roman Anderson of Brandon Valley in the semifinals. Helmbolt won the title with a 5-2 decision over Sissetons Kayden Tchida in the championship.
Brookings had two wrestlers in second place at the tournament including Gabe Stern at 175 pounds. Stern won by fall over Spearfishs Evan Wilson at 3:05 of a first-round match before pinning Sioux Falls Jeffersons Sam Glesiah at 3:35 in the quarterfinals.
Stern earned a 13-8 decision over Milbanks Tate Schlueter in the semifinals before dropping a 7-2 decision to Sioux Falls Washingtons Lane Knutson in the championship match.
Joey Fitzpatrick finished in second place at 190 pounds after winning two of his three matches. Fitzpatrick pinned Quinn Carr of Dell Rapids at 1:24 of the quarterfinal match and Brandon Valleys Elijah Schunke at 4:46 of their semifinal match before Fitzpatrick was pinned by Watertowns Brock Eitreim at 1:13 of the championship match.
Mason Mathis finished in seventh place at 144 pounds by winning four of his six matches at the invite. Mathis pinned Jeffersons Samuel Martinez at 1:47 in the first round before winning an 8-0 major decision in the second round over Lincolns Eliot Ellenbecker.
Mathis dropped a 5-0 decision to John Motrude of Dell Rapids in the quarterfinals before pinning OGormans Gavin Boyle in 39 seconds during a fourth-round consolation match.
Mathis lost to Lennoxs Ramsey Williams in the fifth round of the consolation bracket but rebounded to pin Carlin Hopkins of Andes Central/Dakota Christian at 4:14 of the seventh-place match.
Carson Loehr finished in eighth place at 215 pounds for the Bobcats and won one of his three matches. Loehr was pinned by Vermillions Rollie French at 2:29 of the quarterfinals but rebounded to pin Harrisburgs Nile Laake at 2:47 in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Loehr lost to Washingtons Myles Yitagesu by fall at 2:01 of the third-round consolation match before losing by fall in 36 seconds to Watertowns Ethan Wientjes in the seventh-place match.
Jacob Milliron pinned Dell Rapidss Charlie Person in 20 seconds in the first round of the 120-pound bracket while Sawyer Johnson pinned Milbanks Jacob Giles at 3:42 in a first-round consolation match at 126 pounds.
Blake Kannegieter also pinned Brandon Valleys Christopher Joseph at 1:54 in a first-round matchup at 165 pounds.
Girls
All five wrestlers placed as the Bobcats finished fourth at the invite with a total of 86 points. Canton finished in first place with 158 points, Watertown finished in second place with 148 points and Lakota Tech finished in third place with 116 points. Viborg-Hurley rounded out the top five with 86 points.
Johanna Steinlicht finished in first place at 145 pounds by scoring pins in all three of her matches. Steinlicht won by fall in 22 seconds in a quarterfinal match with Paige Jonas of Sully Buttes, 19 seconds in a semifinal match against Kaelyn Jack of Lakota Tech and 47 seconds against Kenzie King in the championship.
Maizy Mathis also took home first place at 165 pounds after winning both of her matches. Mathis won by fall over Sandra Moves Camp in 1:09 of their semifinal match and defeated Gia Miller by an 11-6 decision to win the championship.
Bailey Tekrony finished in second place at 107 pounds by winning two of her three matches. Tekrony picked up pins at 0:39 of her quarterfinal match over Brandon Valleys Leah Nelson and 2:11 in her semifinal match against Brooklynn Randall of Watertown in the semifinals. Tekrony lost by fall to Brandon Valleys Mary-Katherine Joseph at 4:00 of the championship match.
Ramsie Hinricher finished in seventh place at 126 pounds by winning three of her five matches at the invite. Hinricher defeated Watertowns Josie Althoff by fall at 3:05 of her first-round match before she was pinned by Lakota Rodgers of Lakota Tech at 1:47 of the quarterfinals.
Hinricher pinned Cantons Brynn Mulder at 2:46 of a second-round consolation match before falling in a 7-3 decision to Viborg-Hurleys Wendi Silverthorn in the third round of the consolation bracket. Hinricher finished the tournament by pinning Watertowns Avah Grismer at 2:08 of the seventh-place match.
Claire Milliron finished in eight place at 100 pounds for the Bobcats. Milliron was pinned by Kinsley Sheridan of OGorman at 4:57 in a first-round match before pinning Lakota Techs Iva Black Elk at 4:54 in the second round of the consolation bracket. Milliron lost a 13-5 major decision to Jaynie Perkins of Lakota Tech in the third round of the consolation bracket and a 7-0 decision to Sheridan in the seventh-place match.
