High school girls basketball: Kadence Bownes buzzer-beater lifts Deubrook Dolphins over Sioux Valley Cossacks

VOLGA Kadences Bownes free throw line jump shot at the buzzer completed the comeback for Deubrook Area on Tuesday night as the Dolphins beat Sioux Valley 53-51.

The Dolphins had trailed the entire game and had the ball with 17 seconds left and head coach Brad DeBeer called a timeout. He drew up a play and it worked great for the Dolphins as they improved to 4-4 on the season.

The last possession our plan was to run a pick and roll, DeBeer said. We got that, but Mataya Gouws got doubled and that led to [Bowne] being wide open and Matte Bauman did a good job of getting to the sidelines and getting it back to the middle of the floor. Thats where [Bowne] was and she was bleeding as she got hit on a screen and she still hit the shot and thats poise.

The game-winning shot came after the Dolphins forced the Cossacks into a shot clock violation. Sioux Valley head coach Jamie Granum used a timeout before the possession with 53 seconds left, but he said he wished he would have used another timeout when the offense looked like it was going nowhere.

I probably shouldnt have saved a timeout. I liked our playmaking ability on the floor at the time, but in hindsight I shouldve used a timeout to get a better possession. I thought we had the ball in the right persons hands, but its just an extremely disappointing finish, Granum said.

Sioux Valley jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. The Dolphins then went on an 11-3 run to start the second quarter to cut the lead to one. Sioux Valley led 26-24 and Keyra Kruse hit a 3-pointer just before the end of the half to give the Cossacks a five-point lead at halftime.

Deubrook was able to tie the game 34-34 with 2:39 left in the third quarter but the Cossacks took a 40-37 lead into the fourth. Sioux Valley stretched the lead to 46-40 with five minutes remaining but a jump shot from Bowne and a 3-pointer from Matte Bauman made it a one-point game with 3:42 left. Mataya Gouws then tied things up at 49-49 with a lay up and Keyra Krues regained the lead with a lay up of her own for the Cossacks. Gouws came up big again on the next possession as she grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up and put it in to set up the dramatic finish.

DeBeer said he kept telling his team to stick with it despite the fact that they didnt lead until the final buzzer.

We talked all night about keep getting stops and reward yourselves, and they did that [at the end]. [Sioux Valley] would go on an eight-point run and then we get a couple baskets to get back and we just couldnt get over the hump. Late though, we just talked about making good decisions with the basketball, dont throw it away to give them run outs and take away any chances they have to push, DeBeer said.

Bowne led Deubrook Area with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. She is one of five seniors for the Dolphins and DeBeer said she has become a great leader for his team.

Shes become that quarterback on the floor or coach on the floor if you will. Shes looking at me on the bench and asking us where do you want us? And then relaying it to her teammates and thats sometimes hard to do in girls basketball. Sometimes that girl doesnt want to take that leadership role and tell people where to be. But Kadence is such a good kid, people listen to her. Its not telling them what to do, its just relaying it and they listen to her. Shes just been that leader for us, DeBeer said.

The Dolphins shot 37.3% from the field and were 6-of-18 from three. Bauman had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Gouws had 13 points and five boards. Kylee Johnson had seven points and six rebounds.

Sioux Valley shot 45.5% from the field and was 9-of-25 from three. Kailey Cradduck led the Cossacks with 13 points and five rebounds. Keyra Kruse had a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Isabelle Bloker had 12 points and Talya Vincent had 10 points, five six assists and two steals.

Granum said the thing he is most concerned with is his defense. The Cossacks had 19 fouls on Tuesday night and he said when you do that, it makes it hard to win.

Defensively, we still dont know who we are. One of the things with a zone defense is you dont foul as much as we do, but were setting a state record on fouls. So, we have to clean that up in practice and it starts with me and what we are defensively, and we havent figured that out yet, Granum said.

Deubrook Area won the rebound battle 28-21. Each team had 16 turnovers. Deubrook was 9-of-23 at the free throw line and the Cossacks were 2-of-8. Sioux Valley had 10 steals and the Dolphins had eight.

The Cossacks dropped to 3-3 with the loss. They play at Hamlin next on Jan. 9 and Granum said this will be a tough loss to get over but he believes his team is better than their record.

Losses like that are tough to overcome, but its nothing that this team cant rebound from. Were a young team. Were six games into the season and were a better team than 3-3. We just are, and thats just on me. I have to do a better job, Granum said.

Coming into the game the Dolphins had lost three straight and the last two came by five points or less each. DeBeer said this was a big win for his team as they host Iroquois/Lake Preston on Thursday and play at James Valley Christian on Friday.

Our last two nights we played two good basketball teams and we had chances to win in both, but we just didnt play intensely and lost our poise. So, we talked about that a lot in practice yesterday, coming into this game, no matter what happens, have those things. Play with effort and intensity, but then be poised when the moment calls for you. So, for us to be able to do that, thats a big thing because we broke a three-game losing streak and were able to move forward to the rest of a busy week, DeBeer said.
