Sioux Valley boys win at Hoop City Classic in Mitchell

MITCHELL Sioux Valley boys basketball improved to 4-0 on the season as the Cossacks beat Thunder Basin (Wyoming) 56-50 in the Hoop Classic on Thursday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

The Cossacks held a 9-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter but then trailed 24-22 at halftime. Sioux Valley then outscored Thunder Basin 21-14 in the third quarter and that allowed the Cossacks to secure their fourth victory to start the season.

The Cossacks shot 53.7% from the field and were 4-of-15 from three. Sioux Valley was 8-of-13 at the free throw line. SDSU commit Alec Squires led the Cossacks with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Max Engebretson had 16 points and three assists. Hudsyn Ruesink had 11 points.

Thunder Basin shot 34.7% from the field and was 9-of-27 from three. They were 7-of-9 at the charity stripe. Gibson Williams led Thunder Basin with 18 points. Josh Klaassen had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Bodie Williams had eight points and five boards.

The Cossacks won the rebound battle 29-26. Sioux Valley had 19 turnovers and Thunder Basin had 10. Each team had six steals.

Sioux Valley will play Dell Rapids St. Mary (3-0) in the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday at 6 p.m.
