College men’s basketball: SDSU drops second game in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas The South Dakota State men finished 0-2 in the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational as the Jackrabbits fell to Norfolk State 84-65 on Wednesday night.

SDSU dropped to 6-7 on the season. The two teams traded baskets the first 16 and a half minutes of the first half as it was 30-30 with 3:30 left in the half. The Spartans (9-6) then closed the half on a 10-2 run and led by eight at the break.

SDSU would close the gap to 40-37 two and a half minutes into the second half but NSU went on a 12-3 run to push the lead to 12 with 12:44 to play. The Spartans then went on a 16-3 run and led 70-48 with 7:40 to play. That put the game out of reach.

The Jacks shot 42.1% from the field and were 10-of-33 from three. They were 7-of-17 at the free throw line and had 14 turnovers.

SDSU was led by Kalen Garry who had 17 points and three assists. Zeke Mayo had 11 points and four rebounds. Nate Barnhart had 10 points and William Kyle III had eight points and five rebounds.

The Spartans shot 58.8% from the field and were 11-of-19 from three. They were 13-of-17 at the line. Jack Doumbia led NSU with 17 points. George Beale Jr. had 14 points and Allen Bertrand and Jamarii Thomas each had 13 points. Tyrel Blanden had eight points and nine rebounds.

Norfolk State won the rebound battle 34-26. The Spartans had 16 turnovers. NSU had 32 points in the paint and the Jacks had 26.

SDSU will have 10 days off as the Jacks dont play again until New Years Eve. Theyll open up Summit League play that day as they take on North Dakota at 2 p.m. in Brookings.
