SPOKANE, Wash. The South Dakota State women dropped to 6-4 on Sunday night as the Jackrabbits fell to Gonzaga 83-58.
A strong first quarter from the No. 21 ranked Bulldogs (11-2) allowed Gonzaga to cruise to the victory. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead and eventually led 24-8 at the end of the first. SDSU cut the lead to 27-15 but Gonzaga went on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 36-17 with 4:34 to play in the second quarter. The Bulldogs led 48-29 at halftime.
Gonzagas largest lead of the game came in the third quarter as it led 67-37. The Bulldogs led 74-36 at the end of the third. The Jacks were able to outscore the Bulldogs 12-9 in the final quarter.
SDSU shot 44% from the field and was 4-of-11 from three. The Jacks were 10-of-11 at the free throw line.
Mesa Byom and Jenna Hopp each had 12 points to lead SDSU. Hopp also had four rebounds. Tori Nelson had eight points and Paige Meyer and Madison Mathiowetz each had seven points. Brooklyn Meyer, who came into the game averaging 17 points and 9.8 rebounds, was held to four points and two rebounds.
Gonzaga shot 48.6% from the field and was 10-of-25 from three. The Bulldogs were 5-of-10 at the charity stripe.
They were led by Eliza Hollingsworth who had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Yvonne Ejim had 16 points and Brynna Maxwell had 15 points. Kayleigh Truong had 11 points and six assists.
Gonzaga outrebounded SDSU 38-27. The Bulldogs had 18 second chance points and 40 points in the paint. SDSU had 17 turnovers and Gonzaga had eight.
SDSU hit the road again on Thursday as the Jacks play at No. 20 Creighton at 6 p.m. The Jacks begin Summit League play on New Years Eve at North Dakota.
