College men’s basketball: Jackrabbits handle Mayville State

BROOKINGS The South Dakota State men improved to 6-5 on the season after a 94-62 victory over Mayville State at Frost Arena on Thursday night.

The Comets hung around with the Jackrabbits for six minutes and SDSU then flexed its muscles. The score was 12-12 just over six minutes into the game and the Jacks went on a 9-0 run. They then led 28-19 and went on a 15-2 run to extend the lead to 22 with just under six minutes left in the first half. SDSU took a 56-34 lead into halftime.

The Jacks outscored the Comets 14-7 in the first eight minutes of the second half to go up 70-41. SDSU went up 32 points with four minutes to play and that lead would hold as the final deficit for Mayville State.

SDSU shot 51.5% from the field and was 15-of-37 from three. The Jacks were 11-of-19 at the free throw line and had 11 turnovers.

Charlie Easley led the Jacks with 22 points, six rebounds and five steals. It was the third time this season that Easley has scored over 20 points this season and the 22 points matched a career high. Zeke Mayo had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kalen Garry had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tanner Te Slaa had 10 points. William Kyle III had nine points and 11 rebounds. Bubz Alvarez had nine points and five assists.

The Comets shot 35.7% from three and were 7-of-28 from three. They had 11 turnovers as well.

Mayville State was led by Thomas Gieske who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jamison Kramer had 15 points and BJ Woods had 10 points. Juan Carlos Canahuate had nine points.

SDSU out rebounded Mayville State 48-35. The Jacks had seven blocks and eight steals.

The Jacks will play in their second multi-team event of the season next as they travel to El Paso, Texas for the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. SDSU will play Wyoming on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. and then will play either UTEP or Norfolk State on Dec. 21 at 6 or 8 p.m.
