BROOKINGS COUNTY A dozer sustained an estimated $100,000 in damage after intervening Wednesday afternoon in an attempt to stop a burn that escaped control northwest of Bruce.
The incident was reported at 2:36 p.m. in a field near 464th Avenue and 199th Street, according to a Thursday news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office.
The fire entered corn stubble and quickly spread, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote, adding that a neighbor attempted to contain the blaze with a Caterpillar D6R dozer. While attempting to contain the fire, the dozer caught fire. Crews responded and were able to quickly extinguish the original fire and the D6R dozer.
Damage to the field from the fire was limited to corn stubble with no monetary value. Meanwhile, the dozer received extensive damage, Sebring wrote.
The Bruce Fire Department also responded to the incident, which remains under investigation by the sheriffs office.
