The Tigers started fast and the Bobcats struggled to get their offense as Huron took the opening game of the doubleheader. After the second straight game of scoring in the 40s, Bobcats head coach Mitch McLagan believed that the root of the problem was a lack of teamwork on the offensive end.
I think right now we have five players on the floor that are playing as individuals, McLagan said. We dont have a good flow and were not playing very good basketball. At some point, we have to start learning to play team basketball and get other people involved.
The Bobcats issues began in the first quarter when Huron jumped out to a 22-11 lead. While Brookings won the second quarter to go into halftime down 32-24, they couldnt find a rhythm on offense, shooting just 30 percent from the floor and getting out-scored 16-6 in the third quarter.
Weve got to get more movement, McLagan said. Right now the ball is sticking and were taking bad shots.
In addition to the Bobcats issues, McLagan also believed that the Tigers did some good things on both sides of the floor. Huron had three players in double figures as Hamtyn Heinz had 19 points, Hylton Heinz had 15 points, and Elizabeth Heinen had a strong presence in the paint with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Defensively, we were prepared for what they were going to do, McLagan said. In practice, we played really well against it but give Huron credit. Hampton Heinz had a couple of big shots for them. Hilton Heinz was really good. Heinen did some really nice things that changed the game. They hit some shots and made some stops but I feel like we had a good plan and we just played like individuals.
Logan Smidt led the Bobcats with 12 points and five rebounds on the night. Macy Even had 10 points and four rebounds with two assists while Amari Ward and Sloan McLagan had five points each
Brookings committed 19 turnovers and outrebounded the Tigers 30-29.
Aly Davis had nine points and three rebounds for the Tigers, who shot 48 percent and committed 14 turnovers.
After falling to 0-2 with the loss, McLagan still saw some things he liked as the Bobcats will look to earn their first win of the season when they travel to Tea Area on Dec. 19.
One thing with our group is that our effort is always going to be good, McLagan said. Its not an effort issue and tonight we cut back our turnovers and rebounded better than we did [in the season opener] against Watertown. The effort part is there, we just have to get back to playing team basketball.

The Tigers used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to defeat the Bobcats in the second game of Tuesdays doubleheader.
The Bobcats got off to a solid start, taking a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 20-13 lead with 5:29 left in the second quarter.
Although Brookings was able to hold Huron to just 27 percent shooting in the opening frame, the Bobcats committed 11 turnovers in the first half, which allowed Huron to make a run of their own and go into halftime with a 28-26 lead.
Our turnovers against the pressit was an area that hurt us tonight, Brookings head coach Mike McCarty said. We didnt do a good job of breaking the press and getting the ball where we needed to. When we did, we threw the ball away and those were just some unforced turnovers.
McCarty also cited the Bobcats issues on the glass as a reason Huron stayed in the game. The Tigers outrebounded Brookings 39-32 and was able to collect 11 offensive rebounds, allowing for second-chance opportunities.
Defensively, we lost our guys a few times and if they missed a shot, they were getting a lot of offensive rebounds, McCarty said. It was another area that hurt us tonight as well.
The combination created a perfect storm for the Tigers to take over in the third quarter. With Huron up 35-33, the Tigers used an 11-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter to build a 13-point lead and help them leave Brookings with a win.
They made a few shots, we had some turnovers and it just kind of snowballed from there, McCarty said. It was definitely a tough stretch that opened the game up.
Austin Clark led the Bobcats with 11 points and four rebounds while Keech Bior scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Same Johnson had seven points and an assist while Ben Moret had five points and two assists.
Brookings shot 31 percent for the game and committed 22 turnovers. The Tigers shot 33 percent and committed 15 turnovers.
The Bobcats fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss and will look for their first win of the season when they travel to Tea Area on Dec. 19.
