Brookings Mayor’s Awards: Park and Recreation Board honors

Brookings Mayor Oepke “Ope” Niemeyer and the Park and Recreation Board presented the following Partnership Awards at the Mayors Holiday Celebration and Awards Event onDec. 6:

Park and Recreation Board Partnership Award

Category: Individual

Awardees: Rick Wenande and Larry Ammann

The Mayors Park and Recreation Partnership Award is a recognition award of the Brookings Park and Recreation Board. This award recognizes individuals for outstanding accomplishments for parks and recreation events.

The 2023 Park and Recreation Board Individual Partnership Award is presented to Rick Wenande and Larry Ammann. Both Rick and Larry have been a tremendous asset to the Brookings Baseball Community for generations. Together they worked to establish what is now Brookings Friends of Baseball. Together they built the dugouts, press box, and grandstands at the original Bob Shelden Field.

It is fair to say that Brookings Friends of Baseball would not be the organization it is today without the hard work of both Larry Ammann and Rick Wenande. Today you will find both Larry and Rick cheering from the grandstand of any American Legion and/or Cubs amateur games here in Brookings.

Park and Recreation Board Partnership Award

Awardee: Friends of Baseball/Brookings Baseball Association

The Mayors Parks and Recreation Partnership Award is a recognition award of the Brookings Park and Recreation Board. This award recognizes a group or organization for outstanding accomplishments for parks and recreation events. It is also a recognition award of the Brookings Park and Recreation Board.

The 2023 Park and Recreation Board Group or Organization Partnership Award is presented to the Brookings Friends of Baseball. Friends of Baseball (FOB) is a youth baseball program established entirely for the promotion of youth baseball in Brookings and the State of South Dakota. It is a volunteer program, governed by a local Board of Directors, that is focused on having student-athletes and coaches communicate with each other pertaining to the players role on the team, the coachs expectations for the player, and opportunities to improve for the betterment of the program.

Friends of Baseball is committed to the success of the kids. Their relationship with the City makes them a valuable community partner. The Park and Recreation Board recognizes Friends of Baseballs most recent facility improvement at the batting cages at Bob Shelden Field. And, we appreciate their continued efforts to advance the sport of baseball in Brookings.
