Local boys hockey: Fast start by Brookings Rangers sinks Sioux Center

BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers scored five times in the first period as they defeated Sioux Center at the Larson Ice Center on Friday night.

Jacob Kahle opened the scoring with a goal from Jack Merritt at 2:07 of the first period and Jay Harris doubled the lead 31 seconds later with a goal from Jacob Law and Jackson Heller.

Heller scored a goal of his own from Chase Karch and Luke Honkomp to make it a 3-0 game at 5:35 of the first period and Cooper Deatherage scored from Merritt and Karch at 10:18 and Heller scored his second goal of the game from Law and Honkomp to send the Rangers into the first intermission with a 5-0 lead.

Brookings didnt slow down in the second period as Riley Linstad scored from Owen Schneider and Honkomp at 4:43, Schneider scored from Linstad and Talon Hyde at 5:12 and Honkomp scored from Schneider and Jay Harris at 15:57 to put the Rangers up 8-0 after two periods.

Law capped off the scoring with a goal from Heller and Honkomp at 4:17 of the third period.

The Rangers defense also shined in the game, holding the Storm without a shot over the first two periods. Brookings out-shot Sioux Center 58-3 on the night as Addison Ronning stopped all three shots for the shutout.

The Rangers improved to 3-0 in league play with the win and will return to action next weekend when they play Edina in Minnetonka, Minn. on Friday night.

The will begin a stretch of road games for the Rangers. They play at Huron on Dec. 15 and then travel to Watertown on Dec. 29 and Yankton on Dec. 30.
