WAHPETON, N.D. The Brookings Bobcats took part in their first meet of the season as they finished fourth at the Dan Unruh Invite on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats finished with 136 points at the invite while LPGE-Browerville finished first with 181 points. Lisbon finished second with 176 points and Fargo Davies finished third with 171.5 points while Fargo North finished fifth with 136 points.
Tate Helmbolt was one of two wrestlers to win their bracket as he placed first at 114 pounds. Helmbolt defeated Kindreds Hayden Weiser by fall at 1:33 of a quarterfinal match and Tyler Burchill of Breckenridge/Wahpeton by a 19-3 technical fall in the semifinals before defeating Hunter Katterhagen of LPGE-Browerville by a 9-2 decision in the championship.
Nolan Miles also finished first in the 139-pound bracket after winning all four of his matches. Miles defeated Caden Everson of Gran Forks Central by an 18-3 technical fall in the first round and LPGE-Browervilles Justin Houdek by fall at 3:03 of a quarterfinal match. Miles defeated Border Wests Gunner Hennessy by a 21-5 technical fall in the semifinals and Lisborns Griffin Greenley by a 19-4 tech fall in the championship.
Mason Mathis finished in second place at 145 pounds and won three out of his four matches. Mathis defeated Valley Citys Tyson Klabo by fall at 3:01 of a first-round match and Lisborns Jordan Dick by an 8-0 major decision in the quarterfinals. Mathis advanced to the championship by medical forfeit over Jude Olson of Border West but lost by a 6-0 decision to Holden Hawkins in the title match.
Gabe Stern won three of four matches to finish third place at 172 pounds. Stern defeated Sissetons Hughin Current by fall at 1:04 of a first-round match and defeated Breckenridge/Wahpetons David Erlandson by a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals. Stern lost to LPGE-Browervilles Mason Bruder by fall at 3:42 of a semifinal match but defeated Tanner Merge of Kindred by a 7-3 decision in the consolation semifinals and Erlandson by a 3-0 decision in the third-place match.
Joey Fitzpatrick finished third at 189 pounds after winning three of his four matches. Fitzpatrick defeated Sisstons Mason Shultz by fall at 4:24 in the quarterfinals but lost to William Word by a 13-0 major decision in the semifinals. Fitzpatrick rebounded to defeat Lincoln Swenson of Kindred by fall at 1:40 of a consolation semifinal and Malachi Werremeryer of Fargo Davies by an 11-1 major decision in the third-place match.
Logan Straub placed sixth at 160 pounds after going 2-2 at the invite. Straub was pinned at 1:13 of a quarterfinal match with Wyatt Kosidowski of Fargo Davies before defeating Border Wests Kevin Casper by injury default in the third round of the consolation bracket. Straub dropped a consolation semifinal by a 13-3 major decision to LPGE-Browervilles Tucker Zigan and was pinned by Breckenridge/Wahpetons Henry Slettedahl at 1:58 of the fifth-place match.
Levi Quam went 1-2 at the invite and defeated LGPE-Browervilles Maverick Dreher by fall at 3:40 of a first-round match. Jacob Milliron lost both of his matches at 127 pounds, Sawyer Johnson went 0-2 at 133 pounds and Blake Kannegieter went 0-2 at 172 pounds.
The Bobcats will return home to host their first dual of the season when Pierre comes to Brookings on Thursday night.
