College wrestling: Jackrabbits drop first dual to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. The South Dakota State wrestling team dropped its first dual of the season on Sunday as the No. 12 ranked Jackrabbits fell to No. 13 Minnesota 19-13.

The Jacks won the first two matches but then fell in six of the final eight.

Tanner Jordan kicked things off for the Jackrabbits with a 9-4 decision win over Patrick McKee in the 125-pound weight class. Jordan led No. 6 ranked McKee 3-2 heading into the final period and then had a reversal, a three-point nearfall and a point for riding time to secure the decision win.

No. 21 ranked Derrick Cardinal then put the Jacks up 6-0 with a 5-3 decision over Tyler Wells in the 133-pound weight class. Cardinal had a late take down in the final period to get the win.

Minnesota then won back-to-back matches via decision to tie things up at 6-6. No. 31 ranked Vance Vombaur beat Caleb Gross 5-2 at 141 and No. 19 Drew Roberts beat Alek Martin 5-2 at 149.

The Golden Gophers would then win two more matches in a row to take a 12-6 lead. No. 13 ranked Michael Blockhus beat No. 11 Cael Swensen 7-4 at 157. No. 11 ranked Tanner Cook then made his season debut for SDSU and he fell to Blaine Breener 9-6 at 165.

No. 7 ranked Cade DeVos would snap the losing streak for the Jacks. He won via a 4-1 decision against Sam Skillings at 174. Connor Gaynor then stepped in at 184 for SDSU and he lost a 14-3 major decision to No. 7 ranked Isaiah Salazar at 184.

Tanner Sloan brought the Jacks within three as he cut the lead to 16-13. Sloan, the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 197, had two takedowns in the first two periods and won an 11-2 major decision. It then all came down to the final match at heavyweight between Luke Rasmussen for SDSU and Bennett Tabor for Minnesota. Tabor had a take down in the first period and a four-point nearfall in the second period to come away with a 9-7 decision that sealed the team victory for the Golden Gophers.

SDSU will be back in action on Dec. 1-2 at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.
