The incident began at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, when the sheriffs office received a report of an assault at the Handi-Mart gas station in Arlington. Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote in the release that Red Buffalo and King allegedly used a rifle to threaten a victim and then steal their vehicle.

The vehicle was then driven at a high rate of speed to Volga, where Red Buffalo and King allegedly attempted to take another vehicle from a customer at Caseys gas station in the 400 block of U.S. 14 by punching the man in his face, Sebring wrote. The man fought back, and the two suspects fled eastbound on U.S. 14 in the vehicle stolen from Arlington.

The vehicle was abandoned on a bridge near the intersection of U.S. 14 and 466th Avenue and Red Buffalo and King fled on foot north of U.S. 14, according to Kings probable cause statement. Sebring further noted that another resident played a key role in alerting other motorists to avoid the abandoned stolen vehicle.

Red Buffalo and King were arrested around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday near 466th Avenue between U.S. 14 and 210th Street after a resident told a deputy two people there were asking for a ride, per information from Sebring and Kings probable cause statement.

Prior to the arrests, the sheriffs office along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Brookings Police Department and the Moody County Sheriffs Office conducted an extensive search of the area, Sebring wrote, including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles with thermal imagers.

He also noted that additional charges are pending against Red Buffalo and King in Kingsbury County for aggravated assault, possession of stolen property and commission of a felony with a firearm.

The Brookings County Sheriffs Office is continuing to investigate the incident as well, Sebring wrote.
