The Brookings Rangers hockey program opened the 2023-24 season with the boys JV, Bantam A, Bantam B, Girls 14U, Squirt B2 Blue, Squirt Red and PeeWee Blue levels in action last weekend.
Boys JV
WATERTOWN The Rangers went 2-1 at the Watertown Jamboree, which took place on Friday through Sunday. The games were played in 25 minute halves and did not have a third period.
Huron 2, Brookings 1
The Rangers lost to the All-Stars in their first game at the Watertown Jamboree on Friday night.
Waylon Carroll scored the lone goal for the Rangers with an assist from Cooper Schneider with 12:25 left in the second half. Matthew Bothe started in net for Brookings and made 17 saves. The Rangers were out-shot 19-11.
Brookings 6, Oahe 0
The Rangers routed the Capitals on Saturday night in their second game of the Watertown Jamboree on Saturday evening.
Parker Nielsen opened the scoring with a goal with 14:19 left in the first half before Tryston Hostler scored a goal from Nielsen with 21:49 remaining in the second half and another goal from Weston Baker and Nielsen with 19:41 to play.
Mason Holen scored from Connor Hembree and Schneider with 10:39 remaining and Nielsen added his second goal of the game unassisted with 9:13 to play.
Rhys Heiberger capped the scoring on a feed from Ashton Baker with 7:28 left in the second half.
Nathan Brecher made the start at goalie and made six saves in the win. The Rangers out-shot Oahe 39-6.
Brookings 4, Boji Jr. Gold B 0
The Rangers defeated Boji Jr. Gold B in their final game of the Watertown Jamboree on Sunday morning.
Maverick Bortnem opened the scoring bright and early for the Rangers with an unassisted marker 2:35 into the game and Nielsen added a power play goal from Schneider to put Brookings up 2-0 with 20:23 in the first half.
Hostler added a goal from Carroll with 2:55 left in the first half to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at halftime and Andrew Hahn added one more goal from Bortnem with 18:45 left in the second period.
Brecher made four saves for the Rangers while Bothe made two saves. The Rangers out-shot Boji Jr. Gold B 27-6.
Bantam A
Brookings 19, Sioux Center Storm 0
SIOUX CENTER The Rangers routed the Storm by scoring seven goals in the first period, five goals in the second period and seven goals in the third period at Vernon Arena on Sunday morning.
Carson Kludt led the Rangers with seven goals while Jason Ready had three goals and four assists. Mauer Bartley recorded five assists while Max Jensen had two goals and two assists and Mason Diers had a hat trick and an assist.
Nolan Krogman had two goals and an assist and Cade Zweber had a goal and two assists. Isaac Andal, Andrew Haufschild and Ethan Foerster each had one assist and Jack Lovseth had a goal in the win.
Neil Trygstad made the start at goalie and made two saves. The Rangers out-shot Sioux Center 54-2.
BantamB
Brookings 3, Sioux Center 1
SIOUX CENTER The Rangers defeated Sioux Center at Vernon Arena on Sunday morning.
Colt Vanmnaanen opened the scoring with a goal at 3:44 of the first period before Jermiah Hovey scored a pair of unassisted goals at 3:50 and 10:08 of the second period to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead.
Isaiah Moeller chipped into the lead with an unassisted goal at 13:49 of the third period but Jon Drew made four saves for the Rangers to secure the win.
Brookings out-shot the Storm 69-5.
Girls 14U
Sioux Center 3, Brookings 1
SIOUX CENTER The Storm defeated the Rangers in a game at Vernon Arena on Saturday morning.
Brooklyn Byl scored the first goal of the game for Sioux Center from Maci Cannegieter at 3:05 of the first period and took a 2-0 lead with an assist from Maelyn Groenenweg at 9:05 of the second period.
Ashton Otteson put the Rangers on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:52 of the second period but Kirsten Curiel scored at 10:11 of the third period to seal the game for the Storm.
Avery Dentlinger made the start at goalie and made 39 saves. The Rangers were out-shot 42-27.
Squirt B2 Blue
Oahe 13, Brookings 3
HURON The Rangers lost to the Capitals in a game on Sunday morning.
Hunter Vincent scored for Brookings with 9:10 remaining in the first period before Xander Reeser scored on an assist from Hunter Vincent with 6:42 to go in the first period.
Avery Swisher capped the scoring for Brookings with a goal from Eran Rounels with 5:53 left in the first period.
Henry Dangel started for Brookings at goalie and made 27 saves. The Rangers were out-shot 40-12.
Brookings 8, Mitchell 8
The Rangers and Marlins battled to a tie in Brookings second game in Huron on Sunday afternoon.
Liam Nelson scored the first goal for Brookings on an assist from Swisher with 11:01 to go in the first period before Swisher scored an unassisted goal with 7:19 left in the first period and a goal from Sarantis Theodosopoulos with 5:54 left in the first period.
Maddox Chandler scored with 9:21 left in the second period and Graham Itterman scored on an assist from Theodosopoulos with 6:32 left in the second period.
Swisher scored his third goal of the game from Chandler with 2:39 remaining in the second period and scored his fourth goal of the game unassisted with 4:19 left in the third period. Itterman capped the scoring on an assist from Swisher with 3:10 left in the game.
Dangel made the start at goalie and made nine saves for Brookings. The Rangers were out-shot 26-9.
Squirt Red
ABERDEENThe Rangers went on the road and dropped a pair of games at the Expo Arena on Sunday.
Aberdeen 3, Brookings 1
The Cougars opened the game with a goal from Abrams Goette at 2:18 of the first period. Aries Ellison put the Cougars up 2-0 with a goal from Dillion Danielson at 11:49 of the first period but Knox Frericks cut into the lead with an unassisted goal with 8:26 left in the third period.
Nolan Viola scored from Goette at 9:10 of the third period to cap the scoring.
Rushmore 7, Brookings 4
Frericks put Brookings on the board with a goal at 4:53 of the first period but Sikora Gustin tied the game for Rushmore at 5:31 of the first period. Frericks scored again on an unassisted goal at 9:20 of the third period and Mark Joey Francisco scored 55 seconds into the second period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
Breyton Hasselbroek scored from Karter Schafer at 1:25 of the third period to help Rushmore get back into the game before Francisco gave the Rangers a 4-2 lead with his second goal of the game at 6:49 of the second period.
But Katelyn Orban scored at 9:39 of the second period to make it 4-3 heading into the second period and Rushmore scored four times in the third period to seal the game.

BROOKINGSThe Rangers hosted a tournament at the Larson Ice Center, which was played from Friday through Sunday.
Brandon Valley 6, Brookings 1
Jacob Myhre scored the lone Rangers goal unassisted at 1:40 of the second period. Brayden Brintnall started at goalie and made 28 saves for Brookings.
Angels Hockey 3, Brookings 0
Brintnall made the start for Brookings and made 28 saves for Brookings in the loss.
Bismarck 5, Brookings 2
Gavin Zeibahmer scored unassisted for Brookings with 14:55 left in the second period and Jacob Myhre scored from Liam Heiberger with 6:00 left in the third period.
Britnall made the start for Brookings at goalie and made 21 saves.
Yankton 4, Brookings 1
Zweibahmer scored on a goal from Deacon Trumbo with 3:07 left in the first period.
Brintnall made the start at goalie and made 28 saves for Brookings.
