Small stage, big performance

I just returned from watching the opening performance of Agatha Christies The Mousetrap at Lake Benton Opera House on Nov. 10.

Fortunately for Register readers, the community production is on stage again this weekend Nov. 17-19. It is definitely worth the drive. The acting ability of this group of eight community actors is something I would have expected at a much larger stage. The lead actors, Eric Fish and Hannah Buysse, gave no hint of being amateurs. This is the 50th season for Lake Benton Opera House and the troupe definitely put on a golden performance.

Go to lakebentonoperahouse.org and jump on U.S. Highway 14 to find an entertainment gem just 30 miles east of Brookings.

Celebrate American Education Week

Nov.13-17 is American Education Week.

The Brookings School District welcomes over 3,400 children to our buildings every school day. These children come with a wide range of academic, social and emotional needs. Some children come knowing how to read the first day of kindergarten, while others find it more difficult to learn and for some children, English is their second language. Some children come from a stable financial household, while for other children there is a challenge in their household to make ends meet every month. Some children find it easy to follow the rules, while others may exhibit extremely difficult behaviors at times. The range of individual needs can be found in every classroom.

We are fortunate to have teachers and staff who are dedicated to meeting every childs individual needs. It is a daunting task, yet when I visit our classrooms, I see it happen! Teachers are engaging their students using a variety of best teaching practices, encouraging their learners by complimenting positive behavior and exhibiting positive attitudes, calming children when emotions run high, and providing things like a classroom cap and glove box to be sure those who forgot or dont have them stay warm at recess. The things our teachers and staff do every day are amazing and just short of magical!

Our administrators, building principals, teachers, bus drivers, lunchroom workers and all education staff make a difference to over 3,400 children in Brookings every day! Celebrate American Education this week by sending a thank you note to a school employee, reading with a child, or volunteering at a school.

With thanks and appreciation for all who dedicate their days to public education,

Teresa Binkley,Brookings
