High school football: Hot Springs, Dell Rapids, Pierre, Sioux Falls Lincoln win 11-man titles

VERMILLION The South Dakota State High School Football Championships wrapped up as Hot Springs, Dell Rapids, Pierre and Sioux Falls Lincoln won the 11-man titles for their respective classes at the DakotaDome last weekend.

Class 11B

Hot Springs 13, Elk Point-Jefferson 7

Hot Springs took the lead in the first half and used its defense to hold on to win the Class 11B title on Friday afternoon.

The Huskies got on the board first when Jacob Gale scored on a two-yard quarterback keeper in the first quarter but Hot Springs tied the game a few minutes later when Carson Maciejewski went 32 yards on a handoff with 3:31 left in the first quarter.

Hot Springs took the lead when Colin Iverson found Braden Peterson for a 79-yard touchdown pass with 4:54 left in the second quarter and the Bison leaned on their defense in the second half.

The Huskies tried to come up with the go-ahead score twice in the fourth quarter but were stopped at the goal line with 5:47 remaining and Gale threw a game-sealing interception to Braden Peterson with 53 seconds to play.

Iverson completed 3-of-5 passes for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Hot Springs. Maciejewski led the Bison with 99 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and Peterson had one catch for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Chaney Klippenstein led the Bison with 10 tackles while Camron Maciejewski had eight tackles and an interception. Peterson also had five tackles and an interception

Gale completed 8-of-18 passes for 112 yards with two interceptions for Elk-Point Jefferson. Gale also had 82 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while Garrett Merkley had four catches for 68 yards.

Gunner Ewing led EPJ on defense with nine tackles and Garrett Merkley had four tackles and an interception.

The Huskies outgained the Bison 319-295.

Hot Springs finished the season with an 11-2 record while EPJ finished 10-2.

Class 11A

Dell Rapids 42, West Central 6

The Quarriers scored 34 of their points in the first half to defeat the Trojans for the Class 11A championship on Friday afternoon.

Mason Stubbe led off the scoring for the Quarriers with a three-yard touchdown run to go up 8-0 with 9:44 in the first quarter. Jack Henry threw a 14-yard pass to Stubbe to extend the lead to 14-0 with 1:17 left in the first quarter and Dell Rapids capitalized on a Trojan turnover that led to Henrys 41-yard touchdown pass to Tad Tjaden to go ahead 20-0 with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

Henry threw his third touchdown pass of the game on a seven-yard connection to Cole Ruesink to make it 26-0 with 5:10 left in the second quarter and threw his fourth score on a seven-yard pass to Tjaden with seven seconds left in the first half. Henry capped off his afternoon with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Sutton Williams that put Dell Rapids up 42-0 with 9:19 left in the third quarter.

Chet Carda scored the lone touchdown for West Central, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run with 11:55 left in the fourth quarter.

Henry completed 9-of-13 passes for 144 yards and five touchdowns for Dell Rapids while Stubbe led the Quarriers on the ground with 21 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown. Tjaden had three catches for a game-high 58 yards and two touchdowns.

Aiden Geraets had 11 tackles in the win while Will Ronshaugen had three tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery.

Caden Alfson completed 2-of-5 passes for 16 yards and an interception for West Central while Jesse Jost led the Trojans with seven carries for 47 yards. Layton Johnson led West Central in receiving with two catches for 16 yards. Carda led West Central with 16 tackles.

Dell Rapids outgained West Central 364-200.

Dell Rapids finished the season at 12-0 while West Central finished with a record of 10-2.

Class 11AA

Pierre 35, Yankton 7

Cade Kaiser threw a pair of touchdowns and caught another as the Governors scored 35 unanswered points to begin the game and captured the 11AA championship on Friday night.

Trey Lewis started the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left in the first quarter and Jett Zabel threw a 98-yard touchdown pass to Kaiser to extend the lead to 14-0 with 11:27 left in the second quarter.

Lewis scored again on a two-yard touchdown run with 3:15 left in the second quarter before Kaiser connected with George Stalley on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds left in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 28-0 lead.

Kaiser threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Zabel to make it 35-0 with 10:47 left in the third quarter and Lucas Kampshoff threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Carson Ness for Yanktons lone score of the game with 10:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Kaiser completed 7-of-12 passes for two touchdowns for the Governors while Zabel went 2-of-2 for 107 yards and a touchdown. Lewis had 23 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns while Zabel caught three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Carda led Pierre with eight tackles while Zabel, Carson Stoeser and Spencer Easland each had interceptions.

Kampshoff completed 17-of-30 passes for 171 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions for Yankton. Shaylor Platt led the Bucks with six carries for 33 yards while Carson Ness had five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Bryce Krai, Shaylor Pratt and Matthew Sheldon led Yankton with seven tackles each.

Pierre outgained Yankton 353-241.

Pierre finished the season with an 11-1 record. Yankton finished 10-2.

Class 11AAA

Sioux Falls Lincoln 31, OGorman 7

The Patriots scored the first 21 points en route to defeating the Knights for the Class 11AAA championship on Saturday.

Jack Smith put Lincoln on the board with a one-yard touchdown run with 6:41 left in the first quarter and Sawyer Tolk scored on a 10-yard run to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead with 33 seconds left before halftime.

Tate Schafer connected with Dawsom Siem for a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 for the Patriots with 3:45 left in the third quarter before Haydon Grooss touchdown pass to Ryland Satter got the Knights on the board and made it a 21-7 game with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

Lincoln put the game away in the fourth quarter as Schafer threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Siem with 10:51 remaining and kicked a 32-yard field goal with 5:58 remaining.

Schafer completed 23-of-34 passes for 187 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Jack Smith led the Patriots on the ground with nine carries for 45 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Jarovski caught seven passes for 47 yards.

Brycen Mitchell led Lincoln with nine tackles while Edison Noll had seven tackles and a fumble recovery and Mason Bolkema had two tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Tolk also had eight tackles with an interception.

Groos completed 16-of-25 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Knights. Maverick Jones had 15 carries for 83 yards and Satter caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Sullivan Schlimgen led the Knights with 11 tackles and a sack. Lathan Wilcox also had four tackles with 1.5 sacks and Ryland Satter had two tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. Samuel Marsh had two tackles with an interception.

The Knights outgained the Patriots 299-285.

Lincoln finished the season with a 12-0 record while OGorman finished with a 9-3 record.
