LINCOLN, Neb. The South Dakota State soccer season came to a close on Friday night as the Jackrabbits fell to Nebraska 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
SDSU led twice in the first half but was unable to score in the second half and that led to the defeat.
Avery Murdzek put the Jacks in front in the second minute of the match. Mudzek received a pass from Kayla Anderson in the middle of the field and she then went around a defender and put it past the goalkeeper to put the Jacks up 1-0.
However, Nebraska would quickly respond and tie things up a little under three minutes later as Sadie Waite scored a goal for the Huskers. SDSU would then go back in front in the 24th minute. Murdzek took a free kick after a Nebraska foul and she sent it into the box. Taryn Hettich was left unmarked and kicked the ball into the net and SDSU led 2-1.
The Huskers would respond once again though and tied things up in the 34th minute. Waite scored her second unassisted goal of the match and made it 2-2. Nebraska then took its first lead of the match a little less than five minutes later. Sarah Weber put the Huskers up 3-2 and the goal was assisted by Haley Peterson and Ella Guyott. That would be the score at halftime.
It didnt take long for Nebraska to extend its lead in the second half. Two minutes and 22 seconds into the half Weber scored her second goal and this one was assisted by Eleanor Dale and the Huskers led 4-2. Dale then scored a goal of her own in the 58th minute and it was assisted by Abbey Schwarz and made the final 5-2.
SDSU had 12 shots on the night and six of them were on goal. Nebraska had 15 shots and nine of them were on goal. The Jacks had four corner kicks and six fouls. The Huskers had two corners and 11 fouls.
Murdzek led SDSU with seven shots and four of them were on goal. Hettichs lone shot was her goal. Katelyn Beulke had two shots, one on goal. Laney Murdzek and Reagan Anderson each had one shot.
Weber had seven shots for the Huskers and three of them were on goal. Dale had three shots and two of them were on goal. Waite had two shots and both were on goal. Florence Belzile Emma Prososki each had one shot that was on goal. Peterson had one shot.
SDSU finished the season with a record of 13-4-3. This was the seventh time that the Jacks played in the NCAA Tournament and they are now 1-6-1 in tournament matches.
