DeHaven, Brookings boys win Watoma Invite titles

Brookings’ Addison DeHaven won the boys’ race and helped the Bobcats to the team title at the Watoma Cross Country Invite on Thursday.

DeHaven finished in a time of 16 minutes, 16 seconds, two seconds ahead of Brandon Valley’s Nathan Hauge.

The Bobcats posted 47 team points, edging second-place Brandon Valley (53) and third-place Pierre (57).

For the girls, Aberdeen won with 20 points and Brookings was fifth with 113.

In the boys’ race, Dillon Emo (16:38) took third, Bryce Tappan (17:11) was 12th, Caleb Vukovich (17:12) finished 13th and Patrick Chapin (17:19) ended up in 18th for Brookings.

“You know, the boys ran really well,” said Brookings head coach Chris Gruenhagen. “You can’t complain with Addison coming away with a victory. Dillon Emo had a great finish. In fact, he out-kicked probably one of the best half-milers in the state in Alex Waddell from Sioux Falls Washington. Down the last probably 200 meters it was neck-and-neck and Dillon held him off, so it was a great finish for him.

“Bryce Tappan had an outstanding race and so did Patrick Chapin. He’s coming on really, really strong right now as our fifth guy. Caleb (Vukovich) had a great race, he ran 20 seconds faster than a year ago.”

The Bobcats are preparing for the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet, which is a week from Saturday.

“We’re definitely on an upswing and we ran well enough to win tonight,” Gruenhagen added. “If we run like we did tonight next Saturday, we’ll be able to win the ESD, maybe – six-point win over Brandon and with Pierre only 10 points behind, it’s going to be really tight.”

For the girls, Emily Berzonsky was Brookings’ top finisher, taking second in a time of 15:24. Aberdeen Central’s Courtney Neubert won in 15:06.

“(Berzonsky) did exactly what we thought she could do,” Gruenhagen said. “We thought maybe she could win it and we still think she’s going to be in contention (at the ESD meet).”

Emily Holm placed 20th for Brookings with a time of 16:46. Kailey Schiesl (17:06) was 27th, Olivia Hogan-Stark (17:25) took 35th and Taylor Tiefenthaler (18:36) finished 52nd.

“Olivia Hogan-Stark had a fantastic race today – I would say it was one of her best performances of the year,” Gruenhagen noted.

Overall, Gruenhagen seemed pretty satisfied with the day’s performances.

“It’s been two weeks since we raced, so it was kind of like dusting the cobwebs off, again. But I think we got that out of our system and we’ll be ready to go in a week,” he added.
