Harriet Dappen, 74, died from ovarian cancer on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at her winter home in Harlingen, Texas.
A memorial service is Sunday at Sunshine RV Park in Harlingen at 1 p.m. Funeral services are April 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Flandreau United Methodist Church. A memorial fund will be set up in her name.
Harriet was born to Harry and Lena Holmes, on Nov. 18, 1935, in Faulk County.
She graduated from Faulkton High School in 1953 and Northern Teachers College in 1955. She married Luther Dappen in Aberdeen on Aug. 13, 1954. She taught in Westport for one year.
Her other residences included: Clay County., Iowa, Geddes, Huron, Orange City, Iowa, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Flandreau since 1969. Luther and Harriet have been winter Texans for the past 18 years.
Harriet was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Harriet was a lively and energetic woman who loved spending time with family and friends, square dancing, gardening, cooking and sewing. She was an active member of the Flandreau Methodist Church, Methodist Womens' group, Holly Hoppers Square Dance Club, Christian Women, Red Hat's Society, Athena Club and VFW Auxiliary. She also volunteered working with early elementary students in Harlingen.
Her survivors include: husband, Luther Dappen; children, Darci Cyr of Burnsville, Minn.; Don (Darcey) Dappen of Eagan, Minn.; Tammy (Scott) Livingstone of Boulder, Colo., and Trudy (Jim) Bedessem of Lutz, Fla.; eight grandchildren; sister, Iann (Bob) Collins of Spearfish; brother, Larry (Anne) Holmes of Prior, Okla.; sister-in-law Sharon Holmes of Faulkton and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald Holmes.
