Busy Sunday for firefighters
Posted: Thursday, Feb 4th, 2010

There were no major blazes and no serious injuries reported, but Sunday was a busy day nonetheless for the Brookings Fire Department. Deputy Fire Chief Pete Bolzer said local firefighters responded to five calls throughout the day. The first was at 1:30 a.m., for an electrical problem at a mobile home in Shady Acres trailer court. Bolzer said there was no fire at the scene, but the electricity had to be disconnected , and the resident couldn't stay there for the rest of the night.

The only damage reported was to the main electrical panel in the home.

The second call was for a stove fire at an apartment at 1504 Fifth St. S. Volunteers were called to the scene at 12:44 p.m.

Bolzer said the tenants were cooking at the time. They extinguished the fire quickly by themselves, but firefighters did help remove smoke from the apartment. Only soot damage in the stove was reported.

At 4:29 p.m., firefighters were called to a car fire in the HyVee parking lot.

Bolzer said he doesn't know the cause of the blaze, but it originated in the engine area. The owner was starting his Pontiac Grand Prix when the fire ignited, but he was able to get out of the car and was not injured. The engine sustained substantial damage. At 6:57 p.m., Brookings firefighters provided traffic control at a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 near the Elkton exit. Bolzer said the collision was serious, but only minor injuries were reported. And at 11:16 p.m., firefighters were called to another vehicle fire, reported on I-29 at mile marker 135.

Bolzer said the fire started in the engine of a Chevy pickup as it was traveling down the interstate .

The fire caused substantial damage to the engine and some in the driver's compartment. No injuries were reported.
