Putting the ‘shake’ in Shakespeare

Posted: Thursday, Aug 14th, 2014

BROOKINGS – At right, Craig Long and Julia Owens, both of Brookings, who play Romeo Montague and Harriet Capulet, perform a song and dance number at dress rehearsal this week at Fishback Studio Theatre at the Performing Arts Center.

Brookings Community Theatre will present “Romeo and Harriet” on Aug. 14-17, with tonight’s through Saturday’s shows starting at 7:30 p.m. and a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

Long and Owens play the title characters for the musical comedy that’s a spoof of the Shakespeare tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” The play focuses on the modern-day Montague and Capulet families, which own competing stores in New York City. Clerks of the swanky Montague's Department Store and the second-rate Capulet's Discount Mart are rivals. Naturally, the heirs to these two retail empires meet at a disco and fall in love.
