Richard H. Smith, 85, died April 6, 2014.
Memorial services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church in Peoria Ariz., on May 18, 2014, at 6 p.m.
Richard Henry Smith was born in Sioux Falls on Aug. 4, 1928. His parents were Arthur G. Smith and Sylvia C. Smith (Swenning)
The family moved to Flint, Mich., in 1929, and lived there until 1948. Richard received all of his schooling in Flint. In 1948 he moved to Brookings.
He worked for Stewart Excavating until 1950 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed with the 200th Engineers in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Anchorage, Alaska until his discharge in 1952.
On June 10, 1951, he married Lorraine Miller in Badger. They lived in Brookings for 30 years. He was employed by the Brookings Telephone Department from 1955 , until he retired in 1982. He worked in all positions, from switchboard repairman to manager.
He then moved to Strasburg, Colo., and was the telephone company manager until his retirement in 1993. He was active in the state and national Telephone Associations during that time.
He retired, with Lorraine, to Westbrook Village in Peoria, Ariz., until his death. He was a member, and active, in Peace Lutheran Church.
He had many hobbies, from amateur radio, archery, bowling, judo, karate, and story-telling, but his favorite was golf.
He spent many of his retirement years at woodworking, making many items for the home, and friends; and made wooden toys for needy children for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine; daughter, Pam; son, Steve (Lori), five grandchildren and a great-grandson Braxton.
