New SDSU study reaffirms need for upscale housing

This is an artist’s concept for a Northwest Neighborhood – several private, apartment-style buildings designed specifically for upperclass and grad students at SDSU. The units, possibly including retail shops, would have been located on university land along Medary Avenue. In June 2013 the plan ran afoul of state regulations and was abandoned.

BROOKINGS – It’s been more than two years since the flap started over the “Northwest Quadrant” at South Dakota State University, but a brand-new Jackrabbit housing study indicates that the need for high-end, upperclass and graduate student housing hasn’t gone away.

SDSU President David Chicoine says a new housing report about to be released by the university suggests there’s a gap in upscale housing that would serve upper-level students, particularly for a rental option close to campus.

And this time around, students are expressing an interest in housing on the south side of campus, not the north.
