• Brookings store in business here for 40 years

BROOKINGS – "It's distribution," says Neil Evenson.

Distribution plays a big role in the closure of Evenson's Hallmark in Brookings. The business will lock its doors on March 26 after about 40 years of doing business here.

Hallmark presently leases space in the University Mall, and nothing new is slated to fill the space yet.

Owner Neil Evenson, a Minnesotan who has a total of 25 stores in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, added, "There's more (Hallmark) cards sold now than there were four years ago. ... Hallmark is everywhere now."

That’s the problem for Evenson and the Brookings store. Major retailers like Walgreens and Walmart are now selling Hallmark cards and branded items – even grocery stores are selling Hallmark.
