Mickelson Middle School eighth-graders last spring pose for a photo in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. The students were on a field trip led by MMS teacher Jill Dahl, who has been doing so for 25 years. Dahl will retire at the end of this school year but plans to keep taking students to the nation’s capital every year.

BROOKINGS – “As an American history teacher, this is the ultimate field trip.”

She’s been guiding a huge group of eighth-graders around Washington, D.C., for a week each summer over the past 25 years. And still, Mickelson Middle School teacher Jill Dahl is enthusiastic.

Dahl is gearing up for her 26th trip May 27-June 1. And, though she will retire from teaching this spring, she plans to continue leading the D.C. excursion for several years to come.

This year, 110 MMS students will accompany Dahl, plus 10 students from Dell Rapids and 10 chaperones. That first year was different. Dahl remembers when World Strides tour company first recruited her to lead such a trip. Not only was she unfamiliar with World Strides, but she’d never been to D.C.
