Tackling taboos

Sarah Green-Fjeldos rocks her 1-month-old son, Myles, in the breastfeeding nook at My Generation store in downtown Brookings. My Generation owner Victoria Wakeman makes the breastfeeding area available to all moms, whether they’re shopping at her store or just in the area. The Brookings Supports Breastfeeding project is seeking to gain ideas from Brookings moms and business leaders about how the community can better support breastfeeding moms like Sarah.

• ‘Brookings Supports Breastfeeding’ project already under way

BROOKINGS – A new project called Brookings Supports Breastfeeding is exploring how Brookings could become the first community nationwide to actively support the practice of breastfeeding. If you’re a mom or a business leader and want to get involved, now is the time.

In December, Brookings Health System (BHS), South Dakota State University (SDSU) and the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) partnered to receive $73,700 from the Bush Foundation’s Community Innovation Grant program. The grant will fund the work of uncovering what accommodations are made here for moms who want to breastfeed and of drawing out ideas for offering more community support.
